Job Description:
CENTRAL OFFICE - Major Functions: To provide primary health and emergency care to students in the absence of the permanent full time school nurse. The substitute nurse must adhere to the MS Nurse Practice Act, the Procedures and Standards of Care of the MS Nurse established by the MS Department of Education, and work in accordance of the policies of Desoto County Schools. This is a part time, hourly position with no guarantee of hours to work and work hours will not exceed 19½ hours a week. Duties and Responsibilities: • Provide direct nursing care that includes ongoing management of students with chronic health conditions, administering/supervising medications and monitoring side effects, health assessments, providing health counseling, performing skilled nursing functions, and administering the appropriate level of first aid as needed. • Monitor referred students for illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow up care • Respond to emergency medical situations for the purpose of ensuring immediate medical attention and related follow up care • Attend a field trip, if needed, to provide medical care for students with chronic medical conditions • Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all Desoto County Schools' records • Be consistently responsible for timely completion of all assigned duties and working assigned schedule • Work hours cannot exceed 19½ hours/week • Adhere to the Mississippi Educator Code of Ethics • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities that may be assigned by the supervisor or superintendent. Minimum Requirements: • Possess a valid Mississippi RN license with no restrictions • Current certification in CPR • Possess a minimum of one year of nursing experience (preferably in home health, medical/surgical, or pediatrics) • Possess good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate well with students, staff, and parents • Possess organizational and time management skills and possess the ability to remain flexible and work effectively under pressure • Possess the ability to work independently according to all nursing practice standards
