POSITION TITLE: Substitute TeacherEXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt/Non-exempt, depending on assignmentREPORTS TO: PrincipalTERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As neededPrimary Purpose:Substitute for absent teacher or other employee and perform the duties of the absent employee. Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the academic subject area(s) assigned and assist students in fulfilling their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.Qualifications:Education/CertificationBachelor's degree or college hours from an accredited college or university, preferredValid Texas teaching certificate, preferredSpecial Knowledge/SkillsDesire to work with students of all ages and social and ethnic backgroundsGeneral knowledge of academic subjects, curriculum, and instructionAbility to instruct students and manage their behaviorStrong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skillsMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Instructional Strategies
  • Implement teachers' lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the District's curriculum program.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students in the classroom.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to present modified curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s), as applicable.
  • Integrate technology into instruction to strengthen the teaching for learning process.
Student Growth and Development
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving study methods and habits.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned by the principal.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students' physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the student code of conduct, student handbook, and campus procedures.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Compile, maintain, and file physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents as required.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers, as applicable.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with students, colleagues, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the district and demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible as set out in the Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Keep informed of and comply with laws, policies and procedures that pertain to the role of substitute.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and special events as assigned by the principal.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard classroom equipment, computer, peripherals, electronic devices, telephone
  • Posture: Frequent standing/walking, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, keyboarding, use of mouse, wrist flexion/extension
  • Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
  • Environment: Work outside and inside; exposure to contagious diseases
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions
