About June Shelton SchoolJune Shelton School & Evaluation Center enjoys the distinction of being the world's largest independent school for bright children with learning differences. Founded in 1976, Shelton is dedicated to making a difference by serving and empowering the lives of students who learn differently. While the school is clearly the centerpiece of its mission, Shelton is more than a school. It encompasses three other major components, all open to the community-a speech and language therapy program, an evaluation center, and a teacher-training program. Shelton is actively involved with research and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Children's Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Shelton School is a co-educational, non-sectarian school that serves approximately 900 students with learning differences in grades EC to 12. The Shelton School is accredited by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS).
Position OverviewThis is an on-call position where the employee is contacted on an as-needed basis to provide coverage when full-time teachers are out of the classroom. Serve as teacher and guide of students at the respective grade level and/or subject area in the absence of the homeroom teacher. Supervise students at all times.
General Responsibilities- Availability and attendance are essential to the successful performance of this job based on the schedule of availability provided by the employee. Employee is expected to be available on the days and times stated by the employee and reflected on the sub list.
- Follows all Shelton's policies, rules, and procedures to which teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
- Facilitates learning using the regular classroom teacher's lesson plan(s).
- Assumes the responsibility for overseeing student behavior in the classroom, during lunch, activity periods, and out-of-class settings.
- Conducts assigned classes at the times scheduled.
- Interacts in a professional manner with students, parents and school personnel.
- Maintains confidentiality of all student information.
- Works cooperatively with all school personnel and parents.
- Takes precautions to protect records, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Dresses in a manner consistent with school policies.
- Enforces policies and procedures concerning student conduct and discipline.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files.
- Models correct use of the English language both verbally and written.
- Assigns reasonable tasks and homework to students as directed.
- Follows school discipline procedures.
- Provides a brief report in writing on the day's activities at the conclusion of each day for the teacher.
- Perform any other duties requested by administration.
Qualifications- Bachelor's Degree is required. Master's degree and/or Montessori training are preferred.
- Prefer one year classroom teaching/substitute experience or working with children.
- Must use acceptable English in written and oral communication. Speaks with clear articulation.
- Must complete substitute orientation facilitated by Shelton.
- Experience and knowledge educating children with learning differences is preferred.
- Must have basic computer skills and technology including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must have a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.
