Job Description:
Position Purpose: Under the general supervision of the school principal, to implement lesson plans and assigned duties left by the classroom teacher. Substitute teachers may be called upon to fill a variety of instructional and/or supervisory duties at the elementary and/or secondary level on an as needed basis.Essential Functions:The following description is illustrative of the tasks and responsibilities associated with this position. It is not meant to be an inclusive list of every task or responsibility.
  • Reviews all lesson plans and assigned duties to be completed during the day.
  • Teaches the lesson(s) outlined and described in the lesson plan as prepared by the absent teacher.
  • Follows all district policies and procedures as outlined in the district's substitute teacher handbook.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conductive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Maintains, as much as possible, the established routines and procedures of the school or classroom to which the substitute teacher is assigned.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Equipment:Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone. Travel Requirements:Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff members.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Qualification Profile:
  • Certification:
    • Substitute teaching permit issued by the Nebraska Department of Education.
    • Nebraska Certification as an elementary, secondary, or special education teacher (preferred).
  • Education:
    • Minimum of 60 college hours from an accredited, post-secondaery institution.
    • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university (preferred).
  • Experience: Successful prior experience working with children (preferred).
