**GENERAL OVERVIEW:**
**Nurse Extern Program - Summer 2025**
**Are you a passionate and dedicated nursing student looking for a challenging and rewarding summer experience?**
Our Nurse Extern Program offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in a supportive environment. This full-time program will immerse you in the daily realities of nursing while working alongside experienced preceptors.
**Program Dates:** May 19, 2025 - July 26, 2025 (10 weeks)
**Orientation:** A mandatory full-week orientation will be held from May 19th-23rd. **Attendance is required for all five days; no absences will be permitted.**
**Program Structure:**
+ **1:1 Preceptorship:** You will be paired with a dedicated nurse preceptor who will provide personalized guidance and support throughout the program. You will work your preceptor's assigned schedule.
+ **Scheduling:** Most shifts will be 3-12 hour shifts, rotating between day and night shifts and including every other weekend. Straight night shifts are also an option. **We strongly encourage maintaining the assigned schedule with your preceptor to ensure consistent learning and teamwork; please avoid requesting schedule changes due to preceptor changes.** Perioperative and procedural areas may have varied hours depending on procedure schedules and department operating times.
**Program Duties:**
As a Nurse Extern, you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities, including:
+ **Direct Patient Care:** Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), Foley catheter care, tracheostomy care, incision and drain care, and more.
+ **Comprehensive Charting:** Documenting thorough patient assessments, vital signs, and other relevant information.
+ **Communication & Teamwork:** Learning to effectively provide hand-off reports and communicate changes in patient status to physicians and other members of the healthcare team.
+ **Patient Management:** Gaining experience in managing your patient assignment under the supervision of your preceptor.
**Important Note:** Nurse externs are **not permitted** to administer medications.

**ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Demonstrates competency in clinical skills (i.e. hygiene, nutritional needs, vital signs, and specimens). (40%)
+ Communicates pertinent patient data accurately and utilizes time management skills to organize and prioritize patient care activities. (30%)
+ Assumes responsibility for own professional development. (30%)
+ Performs other duties as assigned or required.
**QUALIFICATIONS:**
Minimum
+ CPR-American Heart Association
+ Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
+ Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
+ Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
+ Enrolled in an approved RN diploma/degree nursing program.
+ **Projected December 2025, Spring 2026, or Summer 2026 future nursing program graduate within good academic standing.**
