Internship Program Overview: Our 2025 Summer Internship Program is a paid 10-12-week internship program, scheduled to begin on June 2, 2025. Interns are expected to work full-time throughout the summer. Summer interns will join an intern class consisting of undergraduate and graduate students to work on exciting projects in one of EDC's many dynamic departments. Summer Interns will also participate in training programs, networking events, and other professional development opportunities over the course of the program. Our Summer 2025 Internship Program application deadline is Monday, December 2. All materials must be submitted by EOD that date - incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Department Overview: Situated within NYCEDC's Planning Division, the Land Use Department is a team of urban planners focused on making NYCEDC's planning priorities a reality. Land Use supports NYCEDC project teams with technical expertise to navigate complex regulatory processes and secure project approvals. Land Use planners lead projects through processes for discretionary approvals, including but not limited to analyzing zoning regulations, managing environmental review and the City's Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). The Planner's portfolio could include projects from anywhere in the 5 boroughs with diverse project goals in support of NYCEDC's mission. Recent projects supported by Land Use include the Science Park and Research Campus Kips Bay, Willets Point, the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, the New York City Ferry system, and various initiatives and projects related to offshore wind, the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, and Brooklyn Army Terminal. Intern Responsibilities:
  • Perform site due diligence, including zoning analysis and development potential scenario planning
  • Support in project management, including drafting and review of environmental review and land use related documents, and creating maps and visuals to communicate technical planning information
  • Participate in discussions with interagency partners on land use and environmental review processes and issues
  • Assist in the Land Use Department's efforts to synthesize and communicate city planning processes to internal stakeholders through creation of background documents and presentations
  • Assist in the Land Use Department's efforts to document land use and environmental review history and issues for EDC assets (e.g. Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, Sunset Park)
  • Inventory and track environmental review mitigation requirements for City projects
  • Gain exposure to complex, interdisciplinary planning projects and initiatives
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Land Use Department
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Preferred field(s) of study: urban planning or related field (e.g. urban affairs, public policy, environmental science, real estate)
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program; recent graduates are also encouraged to apply
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for the mission of NYCEDC
  • Demonstrated written, verbal, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated experience in using database and presentation tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to multi-task and manage deadlines
  • Ability to work in collaborative, cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work full-time, Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM and complete the entirety of the 10-week program
