The Supervising Therapist has received an education including the completion of a four to five-year college program in Physical Therapy, in accordance with the Department of Education's regulations, provided that such requirements shall include a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a clinical doctoral degree or equivalent in Physical Therapy. Supervising Physical Therapists are responsible for evaluating and treating patients, while supervising support staff and performing all of the duties associated with practicing physical therapy.Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Required to evaluate and treat a varied caseload, including orthopedic, neurological, medical, and surgical patients, etc., at the discretion of the Director of Physical Therapy, in accordance with a physician's prescription. Supervising therapists can schedule their own patients in their specific areas of expertise. Formulates, documents, and implements program modifications for patients that are consistent with their functional levels, and supervises support staff and student interns who are assisting with patient treatments. Assists in the annual evaluations of support staff and less experienced physical therapists by addressing position and age specific competencies. Participates in clinical education for students by following the Guidelines for Clinical Instruction endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association, to ensure that each student meets the objectives of the clinical education process. Assists in the review and development of new evaluation and treatment modifications in the EMR in order to maintain compliance with new CMS and TJC standards. Attends continuing education seminars, and/or participates in ongoing clinical education, in order to serve as a resource in the field of physical therapy. Assigns physical therapist assistants and rehabilitation technicians to part of the treatment regimen provided to both the inpatient and outpatient populations. Reviews diagnostic test results prior to providing treatment or delegating treatment to patients and consults with appropriate health care members for clarification or interpretation of test results. Assists with design and implementation of performance improvement projects, risk reduction projects and continuous quality improvement projects. Responsible for staying abreast of new developments in the field of Physical Therapy and related fields.All individuals responsible for assessment, treatment, or care of patients must be competent, as appropriate to the following age group(s): * neonatal (birth-11 mo), *pediatric (12 mo-12 yrs), adolescent (13-18 yrs), adult (19-64 yrs), and geriatric (65+ yrs) in: The ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of patients' needs. A knowledge of growth and development. An understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients.* Only those Physical Therapists with specialized training for the treatment of the neonate or pediatric patient are required to treat those patient populations.Minimum Qualifications1. A Baccalaureate Degree issued after completion of a four-year course at an accredited college or university and a New York State license to practice Physiotherapy; and, 2. Four years of professional experience in administering physical therapy under medical supervision in a hospital or similar institution, or in the office of a doctor of medicine, at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Occupational Therapy: 1. A Baccalaureate Degree issued after completion of a four-year course at an accredited college or university with an approved major in Occupational Therapy; and, 2. Four years of professional experience in administering occupational therapy under medical supervision in a hospital or similar institution, at least two of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or, 3. A satisfactory equivalent; and, 4. A New York State license to practice Occupational Therapy.Department Preferences Knowledge and ability to apply therapeutic principles and practices, technical knowledge and clinical judgement and use problem solving to improve functional outcomes. Knowledge of body mechanics to avoid injury to self, other employees and patients while transferring, lifting, ambulating and during stair negotiation. Knowledge of indications, contraindications and protocols for applying therapeutic modalities. Ability to maintain exercise equipment and modalities in safe and proper working order. Effective communication skills when conferring with other members of the health care team, when establishing goals together with patients and family members and when collaborating on projects with other employees.
