This person is responsible for the management of all programs for children with special education needs (K-12) in the South Middleton School District. In cooperation with the Director of Student Services, the supervisor manages and helps to evaluates all special education programs operated by the District. This position supervises the work of classroom teachers who instruct exceptional children in conjunction with the building principals and the Director of Student Services. In addition, the supervisor is responsible for developing and managing the special education budget. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 1. Possesses a valid certificate as a Supervisor of Special Education, a Superintendent's Letter of Eligibility, or a Principal. 2. Must possess at least five (5) years prior experience in special education. 3. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, parents, students and the public. 4. Must possess skills to prepare effective written communication and effectively present oral reports. 5. Must be able to work with other administrators, governmental agencies, private associations, students, parents, and citizen groups. 6. Must be knowledgeable of curriculum standards. 7. Equivalent experience for any of the above qualifications (#2-#7, Valid certification is a must.) will be considered. Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Previous experience in a similar role.
Primary Duties: 1. Manages the development, implementation and evaluation of new or revised instructional programs. 2. Supervises the evaluation, selection, and implementation of learning programs utilized in special education classes in the South Middleton School District. 3. Assists building building principals and the Director of Student Services with the ongoing supervision of special education classes and assists with the supervision and evaluation of special education teachers. 4. Consults with building principals concerning educational diagnosis and interventions for children in regular classes. 5. Ensures a chairperson of MDE/IEP meetings and monitors IEP dates to ensure all are in compliance with state and federal timelines; implements state and federal special education laws. 6. Reviews Individualized Education Program (IEP) of students in district schools. 7. Attends IEP meetings of students who attend approved private schools, intermediate unit programs, and consortium schools. 8. Works with CAIU and South Middleton School District staff to prepare for the arrival of Early Intervention students transitioning to school-age programming in South Middleton School District. 9. Coordinates and supervises the Extended School Year program, recruiting staff when necessary. 10. Works collaboratively to develop, monitor. and manage the special education budget by including the local, federal, IU, and consortium budgets. 11. Works to collaboratively develop the IDEA-B budget. 12. Responds to parent, administrator, and teacher needs and concerns through telephone, email and personal contact. Communicates with parents, staff, and administrators any changes in federal and state special education mandates. 13. Serves as liaison regarding all special education issues. 14. Presents an overview of the special education program annually to all new professional staff as part of the induction process. 15. Attends all special education consortium meetings and works with the consortium to develop and implement cost effective programs. 16. Presents special education programs to parents/professionals to acquaint them with the services offered/provided. 17. Maintains contact with current trends, innovative programs research findings, and other developments pertinent to special education curriculum and instruction and communicates this information to appropriate staff members. 18. Collaborates with other administrators in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of special education professionals and paraprofessional staff. 19. Attends conferences and conventions where relevant to the field of special education. 20. Maintains current membership in professional organizations in special education. 21. Attends Board and committee meetings and prepares reports for Board as requested by the Superintendent. 22. Performs other duties as may be assigned. Secondary Duties:
