Supervisory Attorney Advisor (Civil Rights) (Deputy Director)

Join our team! The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is looking for a Supervisory Attorney Advisor to serve as a Deputy Director. OCR ensures that recipients of financial assistance from DOJ comply with Federal laws prohibiting discrimination in employment and delivery of services or benefits based on race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, and disability.

Duties

As an organization, OCR is critical to DOJ's efforts to ensure that recipients of Federal financial assistance from the Department are acting in accordance with federal laws prohibiting discrimination in employment and the delivery of services. This position serves as one of two Deputy Directors reporting to the OCR Principal Deputy Director and OCR Director.

Duties of this position include:

  • Agency Liaison for Legal Issues Regarding Civil Rights LawUnder the direction of the OCR Principal Deputy Director and OCR Director, serves as an OCR primary point of contact for complainants and external agencies, participating in workgroup and interagency meetings or public forums related to complaint investigations or strategic initiatives.
  • Serves as a principal attorney in charge of complex civil rights law matters, addressing cases or legal issues that significantly impact OJP's activities.
  • Engages and negotiates with top personnel in OJP, industry, and state, local, Tribal, and foreign governments on critical legal and policy issues related to civil rights law.
  • Delivers briefings and presentations on civil rights law at seminars and outreach programs for the Agency.
  • Legal Reports and Opinions on Civil Rights MattersAssists the OCR Principal Deputy Director in creating reports on OCR's program performance based on formal and organically developed measures.
  • SupervisionSupervises employees. Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by OCR's Director.
  • Salary
    • $163,964 - $191,900/year
    Conditions of Employment
    • U.S. Citizenship required.
    • Subject to background/suitability investigation/determination.
    • Federal payments are required to be made by Direct Deposit.
    • Pre-employment drug testing required.
    • This appointment may be subject to completion of a 2-year trial period.
    • 1-year supervisory probationary period may be required.
    • This position requires active bar membership (any jurisdiction) in good standing.
    Qualifications

    Minimum QualificationsApplicants must:

    • Possess a J.D. or LL.B. degree from an accredited law school.
    • Be an active member of the bar in good standing (any U.S. jurisdiction);
    • Have a minimum of 4 years of post J.D./LL.B. legal experience in Civil Rights Law.
