Job Summary By leveraging extensive knowledge and experience in general manufacturing processes such as machining, stamping, casting, injection molding, and plating/coating, the Supplier Quality Engineer will drive continuous improvements within the company's supply base by developing and strengthening processes that will reduce defects, reduce receiving inspections, and reduce company risk. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Proficiency in quality analysis techniques (statistical analysis, problem solving, process mapping, SPC, Error Proofing, trouble shooting, corrective action process, SPC continuous improvement etc.).
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that is cooperative and supportive of customers, co-workers and managers.
  • Advance computer experience with Microsoft Windows software.
  • Familiarity with blueprint reading, ISO 9000 and Military standards, supplier certification review, dimensional inspection methodology, use of gages, and proper documentation procedures.
  • Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with conventional manufacturing methods such as stamping, casting, molding, MIM, and machining, electronic assembly, and military test methods.
  • Experience with supplier manufacturing process audits, assembly process audits, and quality systems audits to assure compliance to customer requirements.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and superior organizational abilities.
  • Ability to perform in cross-functional team environment.
  • Effectively interface with Purchasing personnel regarding suppliers.
  • Participation in development and implementation of Supplier Qualification process including training supplier staff.
  • Participate in Detailed Inspection Plan (DIP) streamlining activities.
  • Identify critical performance characteristics and appropriate sampling plans for incoming materials inspections.
  • Act as prime liaison with program quality engineers to facilitate streamlining process initiative.
  • Ensure appropriate list of Quality Assurance Provisions (QAP) are available, provided, understood, and complied with through all phases of supplier's process, including special processes and out-sourcing of activities to Sub-contract sources.
  • Work with L-3 FOS Buyers & QE's to identify suppliers with negative quality performance ratings and aggressively develop and track detailed action plans with suppliers through on-site visits and/or audio conferences.
  • Drive all Suppliers for process improvements to eliminate defects at Receiving Inspection, In-Process manufacturing, and At the Customer.Drive Suppliers for process improvements to reduce Receiving Inspection requirements.
  • Work with Buyers and Suppliers to provide self-certified product that upon receipt will minimize the companies Receiving Inspection. Assist Buyers with review and verification of Lock-Out Supplier recover plans.
  • Interface with QE's and other Program Team members to assist and/or resolve supplier documentations, inspection requirements, training, and problem solving.
  • Review and approve supplier process changes while supporting supplier and company cost and quality continuous improvement actions. Ensure robust system in place for timely notification of supplier-initiated changes with appropriate company approvals.
  • Drive for quick resolution and responses for: Verifications of Supplier Non-Conformances (N/C's) and Ensure Supplier Corrective Action Requests (8 D's) have robust containment and permanent corrective actions to prevent future N/C's.
  • Travel to Suppliers as needed to support the following activities by:
    • Communicating to facilitate and enhance supplier relations;
    • Communicating company requirements and expectations;
    • Coaching on Quality Systems Improvements that include process controls, error proofing, gauging, testing, SPC, part/lot traceability, and problem solving;
    • Conduct Supplier On-Site evaluations and provide management summary/status reports to appropriate company personnel;
    • Utilize company communications staff at other locations to assist with site visits and the overall company supplier improvement process;
    • Supplier on-site reviews and witnessing of First Article and Lot Acceptance Testing.
  • Coordinate Supplier In-House visits and management review.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure acceptable Certificate of Compliance of (C of C's) records.

  • 5-8 years experience in Quality Engineering with a BS, 3-6 years experience with a MS, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with multiple manufacturing processes such as machining, stamping, casting, injection molding, and/or plating/coating is required.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in alternate manufacturing processes such as printed wiring assembly (PWA), surface mount technology, electronic component manufacturing, and/or cable assembly manufacturing are acceptable substitutes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, gaging
  • AS9102 First Article Inspections
  • DOD or other regulatory experience
  • ASQ certification
  • Auditing of ISO-9001/AS9100 quality systems
  • Six Sigma, DMAIC, SPC, DOE, 8D, APQP, and Lean Manufacturing
