Job Summary: The Surgical Assistant, Specialty is a highly skilled position to assist a primary surgeon under direct and indirect supervision throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative duties and procedures. Specialties include, but not limited, to Cardio Thoracic, Neuro, and Transplants.
Duties and Responsibilities - Preoperative: the surgical assistant facilitates the safe positioning of the patient according to the surgeon's preference, patient's anatomical and physiological limits, and surgical procedure to be performed.
- Assists circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient to include but not limited to: Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application, placement of intravenous catheters, cricoid pressure application, and other procedures as necessary.
- Intraoperative: the surgical assistant performs specific tasks according to individual surgeon preference utilizing appropriate techniques including, but not limited to: incision and layered closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, achieving hemostasis by means of injection, manual, and topical methods, and application of appropriate energy sources, manipulation and dissection/removal of tissues, aides in implanting, securing, and/or removal of devices and drains, and applying appropriate dressing material specific to procedure.
- Postoperative: surgical assistant applies any other specific dressing material such as splints or casts, assesses skin integrity, assists in transfer of patient, and follows the patient to recovery if needed or directed by surgeon.
- Obtains history and physical on all patients within 24 hours of admission or prior to surgery or other invasive procedures
- Demonstrates knowledge of and applies principles of aseptic technique and maintains vigilance for breaks.
- Maintains current knowledge on procedures, instruments, equipment; and integrates knowledge and skills into practice.
- Anticipates, identifies and prioritizes physiological, psychosocial, socioeconomic, age-specific, spiritual, educational, self-care and discharge planning needs.
- Formulates a plan of care based on assessment and utilizing appropriate available clinical pathways and standards of care.
- Surgical Assistant, Specialty performs additional duties as delegated by the surgeon in cooperation with state and local policy.

Required Qualifications: Experience - Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience.
Education - Florida licensed MD or D.O-or- Med school grad possessing and MD or D.O. degree and a Florida training license -or- Graduate of a foreign medical school and possession of an ECFMG or qualified to sit for the ECFMG exam.

Credentials - Surgical Assistant Certification required.
- Current American Heart Assn. Or American Red Cross Basic Life Support card or Heart Saver card. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
