Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CSTFA) – Job Description
Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CSTFA) provides critical support in the cardiothoracic operating room under the direction or supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon during surgical interventions. This role involves assisting the surgeon by applying traction or counter-traction, maintaining hemostasis, and aiding in wound closure at the conclusion of surgical procedures. The CSTFA demonstrates advanced competencies in cardiothoracic surgical techniques, equipment operation, and procedure protocols to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the cardiothoracic surgeon during procedures by applying traction, maintaining hemostasis, and assisting with suturing and wound closure.
- Demonstrate expertise in cardiothoracic surgical procedures, such as heart revascularization, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissection, and conduction system procedures.
- Operate and maintain specialized surgical equipment, ensuring proper care and functionality of instruments and implants.
- Apply advanced sterile techniques and asepsis, ensuring compliance with all safety and infection control standards.
- Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure patient safety and provide technical assistance during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an Accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant Program.
- Current First Assistant Certification.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in cardiac surgery.
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Cardiac surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Advanced anatomy and physiology.
- Cardiopulmonary bypass processes.
- Advanced sterile technique and asepsis.
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification.
- Strong understanding of medical ethics.
- Excellent vision, hearing, manual dexterity, and the ability to safely transfer patients.
- Demonstrated proficiency in technical competencies such as skin prep, laser safety, and CPR.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialization in one or more cardiothoracic surgical services.
