Job Summary The Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) is responsible for the coordination of clinical excellence through concurrent monitoring of surgical clinical outcomes utilizing the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database. The Surgical Clinical Reviewer works in collaboration with the Surgeon Champion and other members of the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for surgical clinical quality improvement and effective clinical surgical processes. - Performs high quality data compilation and monitors and analyzes quality of surgical care and performance achieved.
- Identifies surgical patients for inclusion in the NSQIP/ERAS database and demonstrates understanding of variable definitions to accurately enter pre-operative, operative, and post-operative data into the registry.
- Uses evaluative and outcome data to facilitate the achievement of consistent surgical clinical outcomes by concurrently assessing the quality of surgical care provided based on predetermined variables, clinical judgment and NSQIP database reporting mechanisms.
- Coordinates performance improvement activities to ensure alignment with surgery department goals and organizational strategic initiatives for the purpose of obtaining surgical clinical excellence through continuum-based leadership.
- Ensures evidence-based practice and current peer-reviewed literature is utilized by all stakeholders when any action is taken to enhance patient outcomes, staff workflow, process design and/or protocols.
- Uses reporting mechanisms to identify trends and patterns, provides recommendations for improvements, and communicates performance outcomes to appropriate committees, organizations, departments, and personnel.
- Collaborates regularly with the Surgeon Champion, Chairs of Surgery, and other surgeons in identifying opportunities for surgical quality improvement and other special projects related to surgical quality improvement.
- Communicates with surgeon staff, hospital personnel and members of interdisciplinary teams to promote quality surgical outcomes, patient safety, change, innovation, and growth of services.
- Attends Department of Surgery, ERAS, Surgery Sub-Sections, QA/QI, System meetings and other meetings as assigned.
- Builds cohesiveness across organizational systems to improve the quality of surgical patient outcomes.
- Communicates and discusses post-operative progress with patients for 30 day-follow-up via telephone or other means of technology.

Additional Requirements Required: Education - Bachelors degree in Nursing with 3 year nursing experience or Associate Degree in Nursing with 5 years nursing experience or experience in pre-peri-post operative nursing, quality improvement or database entry. Certification - Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing
Preferred: Education - Bachelor's in Nursing Certification - ASC NSQIP Surgical Clinical Reviewer Training
