Work Shifts 1500 - 2300 Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION SCRUB TECHNICIAN IN THE OPERATING ROOM AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES OPERATING ROOM / PERIOPERATIVE DEPARTMENT SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide nursing care to patients entering operating room suites, making patient comfortable and safeguarding them from exposure and accidents and/or perform technical activities in specialty suites and specialty areas apart from operating room suites. 2. Verifies patient identity 3. Prepares operating room for surgery, inspects and tests equipment, selects instruments and replenishes supplies and assist with sterilization of instruments and other materials as required. 4. Transports patients to and from Operating or procedure table, restraints and assist in positioning patient and exposure of procedure area. 5. Assist circulating nurse physicians and anesthetist and engages in scrubbing including procedures requiring sterile techniques preparatory to during and after surgery, including Termination of Pregnancy/Abortion/GYN procedures 6. Assist surgeon throughout the operative procedure including passing and wiping instruments, preparing sutures, including maintenance of accurate account of instruments, needles, sponges, laparotomy pads, and rings. 7. Assist the recovery room as need arises. 8. Collects patient's chart, XRAYS and equipment and assist with the transfer of patient to assigned unit. 9. Cares for specimens, culture, amputated parts, instruments, needles and equipmentand maintain asepsis 10. May perform functions and activities of the basic nurse's aide in support to above task. 11. Checks the bulletin board for daily notices and change schedule. 12. Checks daily to keep abreast with new changes in the operating room. 13. Keeps abreast with new techniques and procedures 14. Understands and perform standardization of set-ups. 15. Practices economical use of supplies. 16. Has knowledge of Cardiac Arrest Procedures. 17. Has knowledge of Fire and Disaster procedures. 18. Has knowledge of location of fire alarms, fire extinguisher and fire hose. 19. Participation in Performance Improvement activities. 20. Knows and understands the operation of all equipment. 21. Perform cleaning of XRAY gowns used in the operating room as per hospital policy. Minimum Qualifications Surgical Technologist - Level I (*Earmarked for Present Incumbents ONLY) 1. Documented designation of Grandfathered status as a Surgical Technologist; or 2. Completion of an appropriate training program for Surgical Technologists in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; or 3. Service in the federal government to the extent that the individual performed duties related to the practice of Surgical Technology. Surgical Technologist - Level II 1. Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or 2. Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Special Note: Effective January 1, 2015, any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.
