POSITION SUMMARY Under the direction of the Associate Director of Recreational Aquatics, the swim instructor delivers the YMCA swim lesson curriculum in group swim lessons and private/semi-private swim lessons and the lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well-being of all aquatic facility patrons. The swim instructor and lifeguard will be responsible for building strong and confident swimmers by creating opportunities that build a sense of achievement and ensure their safety in and around water and ensure the pool deck and all patrons are safe. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly that meet the needs of the participants. 2. Communicates and builds effective relationships with swimmers and parents. 3. Communicates information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers swimmers and parents to other programs. 4. Responsible for the safety of the participants in their classes. Acts immediately and appropriately in the event of an emergency. Responds immediately to emergency situations accordance with Red Cross and YMCA policies and procedures. Performs equipment checks and ensures equipment is available, and tests the pool to ensure chemical levels are as they should be. Ensures all patrons adhere to all guidelines and rules set in the West Cook YMCA Member Handbook. 7. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, incident and accident reports, chemical logs, first aid equipment log, etc.). 8. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. 9. Adheres to all West Cook YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. 10. Ensures a safe space by making sure to prepare program space and stores all class equipment and notified Associate Director of any damaged equipment. Minimum age of 16. 2. Must be able to demonstrate the required skills in accordance with YMCA standards. 3. Perform the Lifeguard certification pre-test and the four core swim strokes. 4. Must have current certifications to include but not limited to: YMCA Swim Lesson Certification, YMCA/ American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen or ability to obtain prior to starting 5. Ability to work with and relate to people of all ages and abilities. 6. Ability to communicate with staff and participants in clear, concise manner. 7. Ability to handle questions, complaints and concerns from staff, members, and participants in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner. 8. Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the WCY, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (warm pool facility, upset or injured participants, etc.). 9. Must have the ability to be firm with participants, when necessary, enforce WCY rules, and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all members, guests, facilities, and equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Must be able to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. 2. Must be able to remain in the water for an extended period and readiness to frequently enter the water as necessary. 3. Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. 4. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. 5. Exposure to humidity/warm temperature. COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE: · $16.00 to $20.00 based on certification and years of experience. · Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays 3:00 pm to 8:45 pm, and · Saturdays 7:45 am to 3:30 pm, and · Sundays 9:45 am to 2:45 pm and/or Sundays 2:45pm to 6:15 pm Employment Type: Part Time Years Experience: 1 - 3 years Salary: $16 - $20 Hourly Bonus/Commission: No
