Job SummarySwim Lesson Instructors are responsible for providing quality swim lesson instruction to all participants participating in our group and private swim lesson programs. It is essential that the Swim Lesson Instructors have complete knowledge and understanding of the different swimming classes offered, the levels, and the skills associated with each level to ensure consistency and quality instruction to our customers. It is also necessary that the Swim Lesson Instructors have thorough knowledge of the overall operations and offerings of the Department. All staff must have positive attitudes and enjoy interacting with the public.Swim Lesson Instructors are responsible for teaching lessons in the prescribed curriculum established by the Parks and Recreation Department, enforce facility rules, regulations and policies, maintain a clean, neat and orderly work area, clean up and store equipment after teaching lessons, and completing various reports associated with classes.Position is considered Essential Personnel which requires being on duty to respond during emergency situations including but not limited to natural or man-made disasters.Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrate regular and timely attendance at work, as scheduled and Reports to work free from the effects of illegal substances or alcohol. Must not be impaired due to use of Rx medications.
- Instruct swim lessons by following established curriculum.
- Develop lessons plans for each class assigned.
- Maintain attendance records of all participants for all classes assigned.
- Evaluate students at end of each session and prepare swim lesson evaluation certificates for each participant.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge and understanding of the different swimming classes offered, the levels, and the skills associated with each level.
- Evaluate participants during first class of each session and transfer student to appropriate level if they are registered for a class that is above or below their current level. Ensure related paperwork and class software information is updated to reflect these changes.
- Maintain clean, neat and orderly class areas to ensure customer safety and enhance class effectiveness.
- Responsible for the enforcement of established facility rules, regulations and policies.
- Ensure class management is maintained by adhering to instructor/participant ratios, enforcing class rules/policies and seeking assistance when needed.
- Perform CPR and AED as needed.
- Customer Service
- Wear name badge at all times while on duty.
- Responsible for providing superb customer service to members, customers and guests. This includes:
- Meet and greet customers, assisting them and directing them to the proper swim lesson, class, room or facility.
- Personalize the experience for all guests.
- Handle customer issues and complaints professionally and in a timely manner.
- Exhibit positive attitude and can do mentality during all in-person interactions.
- Speak clearly, friendly with detailed information during phone interactions.
- Send email communications that is clear, concise, and polite with detailed and specific information.
- Ensure correct information is given to customers.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge with and able to effectively communicate all programs and activities offered through the Parks and Recreation Department, to citizens and other customers.
- Daily Facility and Operational Responsibilities
- Inspect and ensure facility cleanliness by performing janitorial and maintenance duties as needed including but not limited to: taking out trash, cleaning restrooms, vacuuming or sweeping floors, etc.
- Ensure pool cleanliness by performing maintenance duties as needed.
- Maintain a clean, neat and orderly work area(s).
- Inspect and ensure availability, safety and operation of equipment including but not limited to: swim lesson toys, swim lesson platforms, swim lesson equipment, safety equipment, safety lines, lane lines, pool drains, ladders, skimmers, and any other equipment as directed.
- Responsible for set-up and tear-down of tables and chairs for classes, trainings and/or meetings or any other activity as directed.
- Administrative Duties
- Duties include:
- Prepare and maintain reports associated with the swim lesson program.
- Complete incident reports as directed.
- Proper completion of timecard.
- Proper submittal of private swim lesson receipts for payroll.
- Work/Attend special events, registrations, meetings as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:High school diploma or some college coursework preferred. Minimum one year experience teaching swim lessons is preferred; comparable experience (for example several years on a competitive swim team) will be considered on a case by case basis. Must possess CPR and AED certifications, or have the ability to obtain these certifications within forty-five days of employment start date. Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Certified preferred.Certifications: Applicants must possess the following certifications, or have the ability to obtain these certifications within forty-five days of employment start date:

- Automated External Defibrillator Certification
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesApplicants must possess excellent human relations skills and sound verbal & written communications skills. Applicants must possess through knowledge of swimming at all levels and associated teaching techniques.Physical and Environmental ConditionsJob Duties are typically performed in an indoor and outdoor environment. Position requires the ability to work in the water for prolonged periods of time and be exposed to all types of weather environments. Applicants must be able to transport themselves and move about a building, grounds and pool/deck areas. Position sometimes requires the ability to lift and carry loads up to 50lbs and to work outdoors in all types of weather.While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee may be exposed to seasonal temperatures, the sun for extended periods of time, wet or humid conditions, blood borne pathogens, body fluids of others, and toxic & caustic chemicals. The noise levels in the work environment can be moderately loud on occasion.In order to be hired, applicants will need to pass a background check, a drug screen, physical exam, and a reference check.
