Click here to view our benefits summary.Position Summary InformationPosition SummaryPurpose: This position is part of a team of employees that work together to help fulfill the mission and goals of the Department of Public Safety (DPS). This team, and the certified/sworn police officer, is responsible for maintaining the peace and security of the campus. The licensed/sworn police officer acts as a liaison with federal, state and local police and fire officials.Scope: Responsible for enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff and visitors and all property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of Mott Community College. Given the nature of the position, this position is responsible for crucial confidential data. S/he is expected to exercise sound judgment on issues that arise.Dimension: This position, under general supervision, preserves the peace; protects life and property; prevents and detects crimes; enforces laws and ordinances; and maintains a public service approach towards the community, and performs other job related duties as assigned.1. Ensure the safety and security of the campus visitors and facilities by patrolling the campus in order to observe the conduct and activities that take place on the premises.2. Provide information and general assistance to the students, faculty, staff, and other visitors of the College by being visible, approachable and available. In this regard, the licensed/sworn police officer serves in a public relations capacity.3. Conduct preliminary investigations and, following appropriate procedures, document and report the outcome of the investigations.Supervisory Responsibility: NoneMinimum Requirements* Associate's Degree or employee must complete Associate's degree within sixteen (16) consecutive semesters or sessions following his/her effective date of hire (continued employment will be contingent upon successful completion of Associate's degree).* Graduate of a Police Academy. Must possess current Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) license or be licensable.* Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and have a good driving record for the past five years. A good driving record must be maintained while employed as a Licensed/Sworn Police Officer.* Must maintain State of Michigan mandated firearms qualification* Knowledge of physical security procedures* Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with staff, students and the public with tact and courtesy. Effective oral and written communication skills.* Must possess excellent customer service skills.* Basic computer knowledge and experience using standard word processing software, such as Microsoft Word and basic use of e-mail systems.* Prior to date of hire, selected candidates will undergo and must successfully pass a drug test, psychological exam, and a thorough background investigation.Additional Desirable Qualifications* Associates or Bachelor's degree.* Previous Public Safety experience working at an educational institution.* Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and basic First Aid.* Firefighter, paramedic and emergency medical technician certificationPhysical Requirements/Working Conditions* Ability to move about the campus while also having the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time during the assigned shift.* Ability to add numbers and write narratives in criminal, non-criminal, injury and other reports in English using correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling.* Ability to prepare a daily activity log in English, using correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling.* Ability to listen effectively to a person or persons talking about a matter that requires one to make a decision as well as the ability to interview a person or persons in order to separate facts from opinion and first-hand knowledge from hearsay.* Ability to recognize and use regular and military time.* Ability to detect people talking in a normal voice without directly looking at them, either over the telephone or in person (within a distance of 6 feet).* Visual ability, corrected, to observe and detect person(s) motor vehicles and tornado funnel clouds from great distances away (at least 600 feet) in the daylight.* Visual ability to read in daylight and with the aid of a flashlight at night, items used by person(s) for identification; such as driver's licenses, school identification cards, and social security cards etc.* Visual ability to read motor vehicle license plate letters and numbers at night with the aid of motor vehicle headlights from a distance of 10 feet.* Ability to operate motor vehicles, and pickup trucks using an automatic gear shift on routine patrol and on emergency responses.Work ScheduleFull-time 40 hour per week position,10-hour shifts. Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays; which also includes working at all sites and locations, including the Main Campus (Flint), Extension Center (Lapeer), Northern Tier Center (Clio), Southern Lakes Branch Center (Fenton), Workforce Education Center/Garfield G.
