Title: System Administrator Location: Suffolk, VA Schedule: M-F day hours (40 hour weeks) Pay: 32-40/hr (experience dependent) Contract: 6+ months with possibility to extend or convert Conversion expectation: $80k+ flex dependent on qualifications + city benefits Under limited supervision, performs engineering tasks to maintain the city's network infrastructure, servers and other network related equipment to allow users to work efficiently through the use of computerized systems. Work involves designing, planning, implementing, troubleshooting, analyzing and maintaining the City's Network Infrastructure. Reports to the Network Manager. Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent with vocational or technical school training in server and back-end systems maintenance with a minimum of three to five years of experience working with servers and related operating systems, setting up, maintaining and upgrading back-end systems and pushing applications to workstations; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Prefers certification as CompTIA Network, Microsoft Certified System Administrator and Cisco Certified Network Associate.
  • Requires a valid drivers license.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Installs, configures and maintains VMware/ESX, Nutanix and various other server/network environments.
  • Supports, configures and maintains backup environment for the virtual server/network shares.
  • Assists in the management and maintenance of the IP address scheme; coordinates new subnet addresses and network connections.
  • Troubleshoot to determine root cause of network related interruptions and then implements long term fixes and solutions.
  • Creates and maintains comprehensive documentation for all implemented networks solutions.
  • Installs, configures and maintains the server environment which supports application servers, file sharing servers, including a Microsoft Exchange cluster environment, Microsoft Windows Active Directory, VPN, Wireless Access Points, Dell Server platforms, VMware/ESX, and Nutanix environment.
  • Perform daily maintenance and problem resolution, version upgrades on Firewall, ESX and Nutanix environments and routine hardware configuration to includes installations of new equipment in Data Center.
  • Participates in 24X7 on-call rotation.
  • Monitors Data Center performance and environmental levels to ensure high performance to end users.
  • Assists co-workers on IT-related projects as needed.
  • Suggests and contributes necessary knowledge of systems and network infrastructure for Strategic Planning.
  • Maintain group policies for domain on prem and in Entra connected domain. Manage 365 environment
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to troubleshoot network errors/failures and provide resolutions
  • Knowledge of and competency in OSI model, Ethernet, and TCP/IP networking.
  • Ability to implement and administer common TCP/IP-based services including DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, etc.
  • Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data; includes exercising discretions in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
  • Ability to apply principles of persuasion and/or influence over others in coordinating activities of a project, programs, or designated area of responsibility.
  • Ability to read a variety of reports, informational and technical documentation, directions, instructions and methods and procedures.
  • Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuations, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
  • Ability to exercise judgement, decisiveness and creativity, as well as the ability to prioritize and multitask in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, description and/or, advisory data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; ability to utilize principles of fractions; and ability to interpret graphs.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with job-related equipment.
  • Ability to ideal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions; must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the city and or departmental practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the positions.
  • Ability to perform technical task to maintain existing back-end systems including email, server updates, SPAM and Web filters, and firewall updates, and implement new systems.
  • Ability to assist in the design, integration and run of complex interdisciplinary systems.
  • Ability to provide support to end users as needed.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques for development and administering programs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisor's members of the public and all other groups involved in the activities of the department.
