Our long-term client relationship with Jacobs has led to a need for an Systems Engineer on the JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) contract at Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX).

Responsibilities

As a Systems Engineer for Orion Mission Planning, you will work with NASA JSC Engineering's EX2 Branch and Orion Program Management to define NASA's Orion's mission activities on the moon as part of the Artemis program. The Systems Engineer's work may include the following:

    Work as an Orion Mission Planner and analyst by being responsible for the coordination and technical integration of the Orion spacecraft vehicle performance, limitations, and mission readiness.

  • Perform technical integration of cross-system issues, including developing issue resolution plans, determining technical/cost/schedule impacts, and recommending courses of action to minimize impacts to the overall vehicle.

  • Coordinate technical engineering integration with other elements for the Orion Program Office, the prime contractor, European Space Agency, hardware owners, NASA system managers, and integrated vehicle performance and other centers and programs.

  • Participate in Orion Program review boards, technical interchanges, and other technical boards and forums providing expert technical guidance regarding the spacecraft capability and mission design.

  • Coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines in support of spacecraft performance and mission planning trade studies.

  • Provide a status of technical assistance activities, communicates to Program management and team leads, elevates issues, and recommends mitigations to the Orion Program while communicating with the appropriate systems leads, Technical Authorities and line management.

  • Coordinate all activities through the Mission Planning and Analysis Lead.

  • Understand mission concept of operations, mission objectives, and spacecraft systems.

  • Develop concepts and define future human space exploration vehicles and missions.

  • Study future Lunar mission campaigns, evaluating constraints across multiple space vehicles such as Gateway, Orion and the Human Landing System (HLS).

  • Work on requirements definition, flow-down, assessment and verification.

  • Work with team members to identify risks, develop risk statements and responses.

  • Review documentation for major milestone reviews such as CBR, PDR, CDR, etc.

  • Review Hazard Analyses.

  • Work on trade studies and participate in stakeholder reviews.

  • Work in a team environment.

  • Report to the team lead to provide status on progress, issues and requests for support.

  • Maintain a professional relationship with the NASA customer, other NASA support contractors and Orion commercial partners.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering and normally possess 5 - 10 years of related experience.

-OR- Requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Engineering and may be expected to have a related master's degree and normally possess 10-15 years of related experience

Requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Engineering and may be expected to have a related master's or higher degree and normally possess 15+ years of related experience

  • Experience in early program concept development and formulation.
  • Experience with requirements development, design trades, development of Concept of Operations, risk analysis, and system analysis of space hardware.
  • Experience creating concepts for operations of single vehicle systems as well as operations across multiple space vehicles.
  • Experience with technology roadmap development and creating technology infusion plans.
  • Experience collecting/understanding stakeholder needs.
  • Experience with interface definition for vehicle subsystems.
  • Experience with interface definitions between multiple vehicles or elements of a mission.
  • Experience creating configuration growth or evolution plans and defining incremental capabilities for a mission sequence.
  • Ability to define mission sequences both within a single mission and across multiple missions.
  • Experience with Test and Verification of spaceflight hardware.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering principles and associated documentation.

Preferences:

  • Electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering degree.
  • Experience working with multiple NASA organizations and across NASA centers
  • Experience with hardware or software development projects.
  • Experience with space mission analysis (e.g., orbit analysis, delta-V budgets, spacecraft constraint evaluation).
  • Familiarity with human space exploration systems (e.g., Orion, Commercial Crew, ISS, EMU/xEMU).
  • Basic knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the space hardware field, such as mechanical and electrical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, and material selection for engineering products.
  • INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional certification.
  • Familiarity with system architecture tools such as DoDAF, TODAF, etc.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.

  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
