Job Description:
SUMMARYRecruit participants for the Indian Child through Adult Education program and provide instruction to meet the educational needs of the students, including high school completion, GED preparation, basic skills improvement (including literacy), resource services, K-12 tutoring, and staff training in the GTB six-county service area.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree and a valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate.
  • Must have one year minimum of teaching experience working with students.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted Driver's license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Must be able to attain and have a valid Chauffeur driver license.
  • Must be able to attain and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • To report to work according to a schedule submitted to and approved by the supervisor.
  • To be in compliance with all GTB and Education Department policies and procedures.
  • Instruct students to meet their education needs.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and make weekly participant progress reports to the Project Director.
  • Conduct recruitment, enrollment and orientation procedures for participants in the program.
  • Maintain communication with students who have missed classes and provide assistance. Refer student to the Project Director for referral services as needed.
  • Instruct students as assigned classroom/site and service incarcerated students if needed.
  • Provide tutoring services to students in grades K-12 at the classroom or in the schools as schedule allows.
  • Provide resource services to those seeking assistance in resume writing, career exploration, work skills improvement, etc...and coordinate with other program staff when needed.
  • Provide instruction for staff seeking assistance in computer skills, writing/communications skills, report writing, etc.
  • Provide information about GTB education programs and services as requested and refer to appropriate program/staff.
  • Develop student action plan with individual students and maintain records of student progress in student files.
  • Monitor student records and progress in the program. Offer virtual services for student success including tutoring.
  • Coordinate Tribal School commencement ceremony.
  • Monitor and instruct student's online Edmentum courses.
  • Other education duties as assigned by supervisor.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to effectively present instructional materials to students.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have able to keep records and provide statistics as needed.
  • Must have patience and enjoy teaching.
  • Work requires proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
  • Must have excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must have exceptional attention to detail and follow-up skills are essential.
  • Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must possess ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Must have knowledge of rules, regulations, and laws regulating Michigan non-public school status.
  • Must have knowledge of rights and responsibilities of the students and the school under guidelines set forth by the State of Michigan Department of Education in the area of Individualized Education Planning (IEP).
  • Must be able to drive a 15-passenger van and have a valid Michigan Chauffeurs' License.
  • Keep records and provide statistics as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESClassroom participantsEDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree and a valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate.
  • Must have one year minimum of experience in working with students.
TPYICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust be in good physical health to meet the daily classroom schedules. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must be able to travel throughout the six-county service area. Must be able to travel to training and conferences throughout the state.TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS
  • Must be able to interpret various information regarding students on a daily basis.
  • Must have knowledge of teaching to different learning styles of individual students.
  • Must be able to make key decisions regarding students on a daily basis.
WORKING CONDITIONSWorks in a classroom/library setting in a school environment. Job requires driving 25% of the time. Must work during the day, except when special events call for a varied schedule.COMMENTSNative American preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment.
