Position Type: Specialists/Hearing ImpairedDate Posted: 7/15/2024Location: Special ServicesThe Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf (TOD) is responsible to provide quality academic instruction for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the Lake Washington School DIstrict as well as provide consultation to staff that work with those students. The itinerant teacher of the deaf provides services as determined by the student's IEP. The itinerant teacher of the deaf will work with a range of students differing in age and mode of communication. Duties:
- Provide inservice training to administrators, support staff, teachers and parents regarding the characteristics and educational implications of hearing loss
- Work collaboratively with building staff to monitor the impact the hearing loss may have on the student's educational progress
- Pre-teach, reinforce or reteach content area vocabulary and concepts where language deficiencies hinder understanding
- Modify curriculum and materials according to the individual needs of the student
- Create lessons in self advocacy and other subjects included in the IEP
- Observe the student in the classroom to evaluate attending skills, communication repair strategies, use and effectiveness of equipment, access to instruction and accommodations
- Evaluate student's progress through formal and informal assessments
- Monitor student's audiological needs
- Assist in the development of student IEP's
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Deaf Education or related degree
- Ability to obtain Washington State teaching certification - certification Information: www.k12.wa.us
- Fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and written English
- Knowledge of Deaf Culture and community
- Experience working with students who are deaf and hard of hearing
- Ability to communicate effectively with students who are deaf and hard of hearing, school staff, parents, and school district personnel using ASL and English.
- Knowledge of current best practices in deaf education
- Ability to work as a team member with school staff, educators and parents
Salary: Paid per teacher salary schedule with Base contract plus additional contracts for LEAP days, and Responsibility. Additional Technology stipend and Professional Fund.
