    • Schedule: Saturdays 10am-11am; September 16 - December 15, 2024, with possibility of extension to 2025
    • Type: Part time, temporary
    • Pay: $75/hr., non-exempt

Through performances, exhibitions, education programs, and residencies, Abrons mobilizes communities through the transformative power of art.OverviewAbron's Arts Center's Arts is seeking a music educator to co-design and facilitate a course titled Music in the Lower East Side for young learners (6-8-year-olds). The classes will take place at our Lower East Side arts center. Class Description: Music in the Lower East SidePunk. Salsa. Hip Hop. New Wave. The melting pot of the Lower East Side is home to countless musical genres and artists. In this course, learners will gain the basics of music theory by exploring a wide range of musical styles native to the Lower East Side and work together to create and perform original music.You are:
  • Committed to Arts Center's values of accessibility, equity, and inclusion
  • A facilitator with a strong ability to teach diverse learners of all ages and backgrounds
  • Creative, confident, and highly skilled at designing arts curriculum that uplifts community members through the arts
  • Highly collaborative and able to work cooperatively with the arts education team in problem-solving
  • Enthusiastic and interested in contemporary arts practices and arts education innovation
  • Committed to submitting lesson plans, time sheets, supply orders, and other administrative documents in timely manner
  • Excited to continue growing your artistic practice in tandem with your teaching artistry
You have:
  • 3+ years of music education experience
  • 2+ years of early childhood education experience (6-8 year olds)
  • Ability to read music and play musical instrument(s)
  • Deep knowledge of contemporary musical genres grown and popularized in New York City i.e., Salsa, hip hop, and punk
  • Proficiency in writing, designing and facilitating arts education curriculum
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Proficiency in social-emotional learning methods
  • Conflict mediation and de-escalation skills
  • Enthusiasm for working with young people
  • Social adaptability and ability to work with a range of learning styles
  • Experience leading young musicians to create original work
  • Experience leading ensemble performances
You will support the Abron's Arts Education Program by:
  • Developing and implementing an innovative curriculum for music education that includes instruction in music theory, composing original work, and playing as an ensemble
  • Cultivating a classroom environment that is consent-based and affirming to learners of all gender's identities, body types, and skill levels
  • Being responsive to learning styles and being committed to building a sense of community and belonging
  • Having a demonstrated interest in professional development and growth of teaching artistry
You will be:

Essential Physical Job Functions:
  • Must be New York City based and be present on-site to instruct classes
  • Possessing or obtaining de-escalation training
  • Must be COVID-19 vaccinated
  • Must be able to move throughout our 40,000+ square foot facility that includes stairs, ramps, indoor and outdoor spaces
