As a department head within the production department, this position offers an exciting opportunity to lead and mentor a team of talented emerging technicians and craftspeople, overseeing the technical execution of productions this summer.Reporting to the Production Director, the Technical Director will play a critical role in ensuring the seamless construction, installation, and operation of all scenic elements, while collaborating with all design and production teams to uphold the festival's high artistic standards.RESPONSIBILITIES:Scenery Execution:
- Manage the construction, installation, and operation of scenic elements, ensuring they meet design specifications and are completed on schedule.
- Oversee and mentor scenic teams, including carpenters and other technicians, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
- Plan scenic construction timelines, manage budgets, and oversee the sourcing, maintenance, and inventory of scenic materials and equipment.
- Uphold safety protocols and ensure all scenic operations comply with relevant regulations to maintain a secure environment for staff and performers.
- Work closely with designers and production staff to realize the artistic vision while addressing and resolving any technical challenges.
- Assist with the load-in and load-out of campus spaces, including offices and workspaces, while tracking equipment inventory and organizing off-season storage.
Team Leadership:
- Lead the hiring process for all Scenic Department staff, and collaborate with other production department heads to offer input and serve as a second opinion for hiring decisions in other departments.
- Supervise and manage the scenery team, fostering a collaborative and efficient working environment through clear guidance and ongoing support.
- Work closely with other production departments to ensure the seamless integration of scenic elements into the overall production designs.
- Provide training and mentorship to scenery team members by reviewing and refining their work, offering guidance on best practices, and sharing professional expertise to promote continuous learning and skill development.
Management:
- Schedule weekly working hours for scenery department staff, manage overtime needs and time-off requests, and approve weekly staff hours.
- Monitor the scenic budget, oversee material purchases, coordinate equipment maintenance, and handle the shop bidding and rental processes to ensure cost-effective and efficient production support.
- Ensure all facilities used by the scenery department adhere to safe working practices and comply with festival safety protocols and align with facility protocols set forth by Williams College.
- Embrace the Festival's commitment to EDIA and Anti-Racism by actively participating in and encouraging behaviors among staff members that exemplify respect; interrupting microaggressions and other behaviors that hinder our EDIA and Anti-Racism efforts; engaging in the diversification of the workforce; demonstrating a degree of cultural competency that encourages healthy relationships with all company members
- Participate in season debrief meetings and document key takeaways to improve the position and scenery department operations for the following year.
- Regularly supervise the work of two or more employees, providing input and recommendations on their advancement, promotion, or other status changes, with such input carrying significant weight.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- The Williamstown Theatre Festival requires no specific number of years of experience or minimum educational credentials are required.
- Proven experience in a management role within professional theater, with a successful track record of handling a variety of productions simultaneously, while maintaining attention to detail and a commitment to artistic quality.
- Proficiency in technical drafting is required, with expertise in Vectorworks or AutoCAD essential.
- Advanced understanding of theatrical construction techniques, including carpentry and rigging, as well as appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and management skills, with the ability to lead diverse teams using a supportive and collaborative approach.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic production environment and adapt to changing priorities and timelines.
- Must be capable of working long hours while standing.
