Build your career while building NYC schools!The Construction Inspection Division (CID) inspects the installation of materials and equipment on SCA projects to verify that the contractors install these systems as per the SCA plans, specifications and relevant codes. CID is organized into units as follows: Plumbing, Fire Suppression, Boiler/Fuel Burning Inspection Unit; Electrical and Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Unit; Roofing, Masonry and Sheet metal Inspection Unit; and the Civil, Architectural, Window and Door Inspection Unit. CID works closely with Architecture & Engineering (A&E), Construction Management and Building Code Compliance to ensure that the SCA receives a quality product.Job Description SummaryThe Technical Inspector is responsible for inspecting regulatory documentation and field construction sites/facilities to ensure compliance with relevant construction documents, codes and standards. Technical inspectors assist Project Officers by completing inspection reports that identify deficiencies in the work that needs to be corrected. Some inspectors also assist Project Officers prior to the start of construction to help clarify SCA requirements and specifications and make recommendations for improvement. Some review and accept regulatory documents required for the closeout process.Job DescriptionResponsibilities include:
  • Interprets complex plans and specifications; confers with Engineers, Architects and Project Officers.
  • Assists & advises Project Management, Expediters, applicants, contractor/sub-contractors & Construction Manager's.
  • Prepares detailed inspection reports that are transmitted to the Project Officers.
  • Maintains computerized records of files & reports on the progress of projects (i.e., CIP and line).
  • Inspects field construction sites/facilities to ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards and makes checks of work in progress.
  • Makes periodic visits to projects and makes final inspection of completed work.
  • Maintains updated information on all relevant codes, specifications, State and local laws, etc.
  • Reviews regulatory documents required for the closeout process.
  • Assists Plan Examiners/Engineers to achieve signoffs.
  • Occasionally attends training in inspection techniques relating to acceptability of materials, methods, and work performed.
  • Reviews laboratory tests to ensure that materials meet specifications; performs inspections.
  • Performs related duties.

  • Plumbing (Requires Master Plumbers License)

Civil Service Classification: CompetitivePosting End Date: 11/21/2024Salary:
  • Appointment Rate: $70,457 - $103,710
  • Incumbent Rate: $81,026 - $119,266
Subject to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the appointment rate for any newly hired employee, or employees with less than two years of active City or SCA service, shall be 15% less than the applicable incumbent rate or step.EducationHigh school diploma or its educational equivalentCertifications (if required)Work ExperienceThree years of relevant building construction experience; must have been working in any of the following areas; inspection, quality assurance, electrician, plumber, HVAC, roofing, masonry, architectural/civil, windows and doors, regulatory documentation, etc. or a satisfactory combination of education and experience. Must have three years of experience in the specialty area to which you are applying.
