The Recreation Specialist is responsible for all participants in a program area and the implementation and leadership of all activities at the site as assigned to include, but not limited to enforcing rules, regulations, and leading staff while engaging and interacting with participants and public to create a fun structured environment. The Recreation Specialist is also responsible for assigned office tasks and assisting in program planning. This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required for the position. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct supervision of all staff at site - includes daily guidance and evaluations
- Responsible for planning weekly program of activities
- Appropriate direct management of all youth and adults
- Facilitation of activities for all groups
- Establish a positive rapport with all participants in program
- Attend all staff meetings and training sessions, including any state-mandated courses
- Assist with administering staff meetings and training sessions
- Responsible for maintaining equipment and supplies and tracking inventories
- Responsible for effectively handling all emergency incidents that occur, using mature, sound judgment
- Ensure adequate communication with staff/supervisor/parents and participants
- Operates Point of Sale (POS) and registration system to establish memberships and collect fees
- Driving City vehicle with supplies and equipment to program sites and City facilities
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:
- Ensure accurate attendance records are kept current at all times
- Complete office tasks as assigned by coordinator
- Responsible for maintaining current records and data on participants and employees
- Must perform duties and documentation in a timely manner as instructed
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
- May perform the duties of similar classifications at an equal or lower pay grade
Physical Standards:
- Ability to stand, walk, and engage in physical activities for extended periods
- Must have the ability to lift and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation
- Adequate vision and hearing to supervise activities and respond to safety concerns
- Proficient use of hands for handling equipment and maintaining facilities
- Commitment to adhering to safety protocols and wearing appropriate attire and gear
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of an assigned program area
- Knowledge of recreation, sports, and youth/teen/adult programming
- Knowledge of appropriate staff supervision skills
- Knowledge of group management techniques
- Ability to oversee, coordinate, and implement programs in assigned area
- Ability to recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing services
- Ability to provide lead direction to program participants and staff
- Ability to evaluate and recommend programs that meet community needs
- Ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations in assigned program areas
- Ability to run program if the coordinator is unable to perform tasks
- Ability to ensure program compliance with mandated City policies, procedures, rules and regulations
- Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public and other agencies and organizations
- The individual must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule which may include mornings, nights, weekdays, weekends, and holidays
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above, this position requires the following:
- Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required
- Must submit to and pass a pre-employment background check
- Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug screen
- At least two years of experience in recreation setting
- Extensive knowledge in specialized programming >50%
- A valid driver's license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of employment
- License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification
- During employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position involves regular exposure to noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes, and extended direct expose to the sun.CPR and First Aid certification must be obtained within six months of appointment. All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination. City of Pueblo Temporary and Seasonal Employee Sick Leave BenefitsBeginning January 1, 2021, all employers in Colorado are required to provide paid sick leave to employees under the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act ( HFWA ). Said leave is accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours. Per the Act, leave may be used for any of the following reasons:
- The employee has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care, or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventive medical care.
- The employee needs to care for a family member who has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care, or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventive medical care.
- The employee or family member has been the victim of domestic abuse, sexual assault, or harassment and needs to be absent from work for purposes related to such crime; or
- A public official has ordered the closure of the school or place of care of the employee's child or of the employee's place of business due to a public health emergency, necessitating the employee's absence from work.
Consistent with the HWFA, part-time temporary and seasonal employees of the City shall not carry forward more than forty-eight (48) hours of unused sick leave from one year to the next. Pueblo Municipal Code 6-6-5.5, 6-6-5 and 6-6-6City employment as a temporary or seasonal employee means that the most you can expect to work is 1300 hours in a calendar year. Depending on the work schedule required by the hiring department, this means more time to spend with your family and/or doing other activities.
