SUMMARY

Under general supervision, assists in the cleaning and maintenance of animal welfare facility and in care and humane treatment of animals in the shelter population.

Example of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Provides a high level of care to animals in the shelter;

* Cleans, disinfects, and maintains indoor and outdoor kennels at or above applicable standards.

* Handles, restrains, and transports animals as needed;

* Provides food and water for animals and livestock as appropriate;

* Bathes and medicates animals as needed or directed by staff and/or veterinarian;

* Observe and report animal appearances and activities for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent;

* Prepares and maintains accurate records (including, but not limited to cleaning logs);

* Updates and organizes inventories of equipment, materials, and supplies required to support daily operations;

* Ensures that animals in custody are maintained in a healthy and sanitary environment as required by state laws and the liabilities incurred with the seizure of personal property;

* Inputs data into shelter software;

* Assist in the general maintenance and security of the shelter;

* Maintains positive attitude and works well with team members to accomplish projects and duties;

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Texas Driver's License

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Experience and Training Guidelines:

Must be at least 18 years of age, have no more than 20/200 vision that is correctable to 20/20, have no past convictions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI or DUI), have no more than three moving violations within the last two years, not have ANY felony convictions, not have ANY misdemeanor convictions for any offense involving moral turpitude or family violence, be a United States Citizen [born or naturalized], possess an honorable discharge if prior military service, have a current, working telephone, and not have been previously re-hired by the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office more than once.

Knowledge of:

* Proper care and treatment of all types of animals;

* Minimum standards for animal welfare facility;

* Proper use, care and maintenance of tools such as catch poles, traps, kennels, leashes and lariat ropes;

* Applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations;

* Modern office procedures and equipment;

* Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.

Skill in:

* Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, including writing routine correspondence, reports, and specialized legal documents;

* Maintaining strict confidentiality;

* Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules;

* Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusion;

* Performing effectively under stressful working conditions;

* Multitasking and adjusting to constantly-changing projects and prioritizing job scheduling daily;

Operating a computer and various software applications.

Environmental Conditions:Duties and trainings are generally performed within Brazoria County in both indoor and outdoor environments. Occasionally, duties and trainings are performed outside Brazoria County. Exposure to extreme and stressful environmental conditions may include, but not limited to: Natural disasters; Manmade disasters; Exposure to toxic chemicals; Adverse weather conditions involving heat, cold, rain, wind, and ice; Exposure to bio-hazardous materials; High-voltage areas; Low-light to no light conditions; Bright light conditions; Smoky conditions; Areas containing dangerous animals; Confined spaces; Areas in which heavy machinery may be operating; Roadways; Areas containing dangerous debris; Areas containing deceased animals; Spaces not in compliant with local, state, and federal safety code and law regulations/laws.

Physical Demands:Certain physical abilities are required to ensure the essential functions of the position are able to be performed. These abilities may include, but not limited to: Walking, running, crawling, standing, sitting, jumping, kneeling, bending over, laying down for long periods of time; Carry, push, pull, drag, or hold medium to heavy objects; Maintain rational decision making abilities; Speak and hear in order to communicate effectively in person and through telephone.
