Job Description:

The Student Navigator will work one-on-one with students with disabilities by supporting social engagement within the campus community. This position involves meeting regularly with students to discover goals, develop a person-centered plan, and explore campus activities that align with the student's interests. The Navigator will also attend campus events and activities with student(s) to facilitate communication and interaction. This position is part of a brand-new pilot program, Orange Explorers , with the Center for Disability Resources.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

* A motivated, self-directed individual with experience and knowledge working with neurodivergent students.

* Follows and utilizes a 'Social Justice Model' regarding disability to guide their professional practice.

* Knowledge of the Syracuse University Campus, specifically around events, activities, and social opportunities for students.

* Ability to mentor and support a neurodiverse population of incoming students with social participation within the campus community.

Responsibilities

* Part-time position, up to 20 hours per week from August - May (academic year). Hours may vary based on number of students in program.

* Flexible schedule: willingness and availability to attend campus events during evenings and/or weekends with student(s).

* Navigator will play an active role when attending events with the student by supporting their engagement, facilitating communication, and evaluating areas for self-reflection.

* Learn and apply the MAPS process to create and develop a person-centered plan by empowering young adults through self-exploration.

* Support student self-advocacy skills and self-monitoring through modeling and coaching.

* Ability to maintain strong personal boundaries in a mentorship student relationship.

* Plan and lead student group events/activities to initiate social connections.

* Document each student's goals, progress, and barriers through a weekly engagement plan.
