Job Summary:This is a 300 hour paid internshipdesigned to provide the student with hands-on experience in therapeuticrecreation for senior adults. Under the guidance of the Therapeutic RecreationDirector, the intern will assist in creating and implementing individual andgroup activities that meet the psychosocial needs of residents. This internshipwill provide learning opportunities in care planning, interdisciplinarycollaboration, and program evaluation, all within a supportive environment.
Essential Functions:Treats all information aboutresidents, their condition, and family as confidential informationComplies with establishedCorporate and Departmental policies and procedures and maintains establishedstandards and practicesSupports the TherapeuticRecreation Director in the implementation and execution of individual and groupactivities for residents in the Health Care CenterAssists in residentassessments, care planning, and the implementation of individualized careplans, gaining exposure to care planning processesParticipates in thedevelopment, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the activitiesprogram, gaining leadership experience by facilitating activities for residentsCollaborates withinterdisciplinary teams, including resident care planning meetings, offering anopportunity to learn how different departments work togetherContributes to the creationof the activity calendar, learning how to design and adapt activities based onresident needs and responsesWorks with the Wellness andAssisted Lifestyles Directors to develop integrated activities across differentcare levelsGains experience in thefacilities' processes of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QA/PI)processes. Interns may complete a researchproject or paper based on an identified QA/PI issue, under the supervision ofthe Therapeutic Recreation DirectorAttends and observes residentcouncil meetings, learning about the feedback process and resident issueresolutionPerforms other functions asdirected by the supervisorQualifications:Currently pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family Studies,Occupational Therapy, Kinesiology, or a related field at an accreditedinstitutionPassion for working with senior adults and an interest in therapeuticrecreationAbility to listen to and communicate with residents at a level theyunderstandQualities of creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination in planningresident activitiesExperience working with seniors (preferred but not required)Physical Requirements:Must be ableto constantly work on their feet during an 8-hour shift. Sometimes involved in assisting withresident transfers or repositioning. Must be able to react quickly anddecisively in emergency situations and during unexpected behavior orresidents. Must be abto push residents whoare in a wheelchair frequently throughout an 8-hour shift.
