Position Summary:

Responsible for support of tooling and equipment needs of manufacturing operations through a combination of direct design, supplier procurement, and asset management activities. The Tool & Equipment Specialist oversees tools and equipment from inception through production release and ongoing production support, in concert with area Process Engineers. Scope includes a wide range of tools and machinery of varying complexities in support of machining or light assembly processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct any required preliminary study, refer to available drawings, marked drawings, sketches, verbal instructions, and specifications of similar or related products or parts. Determine proper size, materials, and plan design working with Process Engineer and production staff to optimize the tool performance, cost, throughput and safety.
  • Prepare new detailed tool drawings with tolerances and material specifications using SolidWorks. Verify accuracy of detailed drawings including basic engineering and tolerance calculations.
  • Assure that selection of parts and design conform to basic mechanical principles necessary to produce good production tooling. Work with stakeholders to analyze problems with existing fixtures, tools and gages, and recommend changes for improvement.
  • Modify and adapt existing tool designs for specific purpose applications to achieve lower manufacturing cost.
  • Drive standardization and simplification of tooling.
  • Work with vendors/suppliers to resolve questions and problems regarding the manufacture of tools and gages.
  • Develop and maintain tool manufacturing sources and suppliers to meet growing tool demand, costs, turn-around-time, and quality.
  • Maintain tool records and files. Assign tool numbers and support interface with other systems.
  • Support capital investment projects as assigned. Support may range from technical advisory capacity to project management in line with business strategies.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to interpret and understand technical drawings and engineering specifications
  • General knowledge of machining and mechanical assembly processes
  • General knowledge of shop operations and practices.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Strong written and oral communication
  • Effective self-starter
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Effective work and time management skills, ability to multi-task and work individually or on a team

Desired Additional Skills

Strong preference will be given to candidates who also have experience in one or more of these disciplines.

  • Continuous improvement
  • Lean manufacturing principles
  • Toolmaking experience
  • Experience using ERP systems (Oracle, SAP, etc.) or database tools
  • Familiarity with process control and aerospace quality requirements
  • Experience as a leader of, or significant contributor to, capital investment projects
  • Experience in supervision, shop floor lead or set up is a plus

Education and Experience:

  • Four (4) year technical degree or minimum of seven (7) years equivalent work experience .
  • Proficient in use of SolidWorks, or willingness to learn based on other equivalent CAD expertise
  • Must demonstrate the ability to interpret technical drawings
  • Must demonstrate the ability to take mechanical measurements using dial calipers, height gages, micrometers, as well as other mechanical measurements tools.
  • Must possess a good working knowledge of casting, machining, and assembly processes.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to traverse the production floor safely.
