- Mold Construction: Construct high-precision thermoplastic injection molds according to engineering drawings, CAD/CAM models, and technical specifications. This includes machining complex mold components to tight tolerances and assembling intricate mold assemblies.
- Mold Design: Collaborate with engineering and design teams to develop mold designs optimized for thermoplastic injection molding processes. Ensure proper gating, venting, cooling, and ejection systems to achieve high-quality molded parts.
- Precision Machining: Utilize advanced machining techniques, including CNC milling, turning, grinding, and EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining), to fabricate mold cavities, cores, inserts, and other components with exceptional accuracy and surface finish.
- Tooling Maintenance: Perform maintenance, repairs, and modifications on Class A injection molds to ensure consistent performance and longevity. Conduct thorough inspections, cleanings, and lubrications to prevent premature wear and damage.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct comprehensive inspections and dimensional checks on finished mold components to verify conformance to specifications and quality standards. Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines).
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues related to mold functionality, part defects, dimensional discrepancies, and surface imperfections. Implement corrective actions and process improvements to optimize mold performance and part quality.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed records of mold construction, modifications, repairs, and maintenance activities. Document design changes, engineering revisions, and production parameters for future reference and continuous improvement.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to strict safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment in the tooling shop. Follow proper handling and disposal guidelines for hazardous materials and waste generated during mold making operations.
Qualifications:
Education: While formal education requirements can vary, many Class A tool maker positions prefer candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers may also require additional technical training or certification in mold making, machining, or related fields. Experience: Extensive experience in the construction and maintenance of Class A thermoplastic injection molds, preferably in a manufacturing or tooling environment. Demonstrated proficiency in precision machining and mold assembly techniques. - Significant hands-on experience in mold making, particularly in the construction of Class A injection molds.
- Experience with mold design principles, including gating, venting, cooling, and ejection systems.
- Familiarity with thermoplastic materials and their properties, as well as injection molding processes and parameters.
- Experience with mold maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of mold design principles, injection molding processes, thermoplastic materials, and mold tooling technologies. - Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, CAD/CAM drawings, and technical specifications.
- Expertise in precision machining techniques, including milling, turning, grinding, and EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining).
- Knowledge of CNC programming and operation.
- Ability to use a variety of hand tools and measuring instruments with precision.
Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to diagnose complex mold issues and develop effective solutions. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, dimensional, and process-related problems with precision. Solve complex problems related to mold design, manufacturing, and operation. Ability to work with tight tolerances and intricate geometries to produce high-quality molds. Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with engineering teams, production staff, and supervisors. Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely. Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Willingness to learn and apply new technologies, techniques, and best practices in mold making.
