Jekyll Island, the smallest barrier island on Georgia's coast, is dedicated to maintaining the delicate balance between nature and humankind through conservation, education, and preservation. Surrounded by salt marshes, expansive oceanfront, and ancient maritime forests, it is situated within the chain of the Golden Isles and just a few miles from St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Brunswick. As a State Park, Jekyll Island is a coastal haven where nature and humans peacefully co-exist.

Summary:

The Jekyll Island Authority Museum is seeking a part-time Tour Guide / Interpreter I to provide enthusiastic and dynamic instruction for school groups, motor coach groups, and the general public, serving a wide range of audiences. Under general supervision, the tour guide/interpreter performs general operational duties such as performing tours, providing security for tour homes and objects in the museum collection, interacting with guests, answering questions, providing the public with information regarding the subject of the tour, and answering questions from the public. Provides general customer service to visitors of the historic district. Participates in developing new programs by assisting with research, special projects, archival organization, and curatorial duties as assigned.

Description:

* Provides a variety of interpretive experiences relating to Jekyll Island's eventful past.

* Conducts tours of the Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District and various other public education programs for school groups, motor coach groups, and the general public.

* Provides quality educational experiences for all ages (students, seniors, community groups, etc.)

* Drives tour tram as assigned.

* Provides security for museum properties and collections and ensures guest safety.

* Performs maintenance inspections on museum equipment and light custodial duties.

* Assists with general clerical duties for the department professionally and courteously, including answering the phone and distributing messages correctly, copying and faxing material as requested, mailing distribution, and creating correspondence as directed.

* Will be cross-trained to assist with retail and ticket sales and staffing museum historic property rentals.

* Participates in regular staff development training sessions.

* Conducts research and project development for museum efforts as assigned.

* Participates in and contributes to maintaining lines of communication between Museum Operations and the Curatorial staff. Works with the Curatorial department to provide an accurate and excellent interpretation of Jekyll Island's past.

* Maintains a cooperative and pleasant work relationship with fellow employees, volunteers, and guests of Jekyll Island.

* Night and weekend availability is required.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements:

* Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.

* A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

* Bachelor's degree or advanced studies in history, public history, or museum studies preferred.

* Minimum of two years related experience.

* Must be a skilled and effective communicator and dynamic presenter committed to learning and education.

* A positive, friendly, outgoing personality is a must.

* Must be self-motivated; able to work independently and with a team.

* Must have flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

* Must attend required training that includes a weekday schedule.

Physical Requirements:

* Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

* More than 50% of the typical workday may be spent walking, sitting, and standing.

* Between 25% and 50% of the typical workday may be spent climbing stairs, pushing, and pulling.

* Less than 25% of the typical day is spent balancing, stooping and crouching, kneeling, reaching, sitting, and repetitive wrists, hands, or finger motions.

* Sensory abilities required are feeling, grasping, and touching, with more than 50% of the time spent talking and hearing.

* Visual abilities to perform tasks required are to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment and determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.

* Required to perform work in outdoor environmental conditions. Exposure to extreme heat, high humidity, occasionally adverse weather conditions, and occasional extreme cold.

* Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts and moving vehicles.

* Will be subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, oils, odors, dust, mists, or poor ventilation.

* Will be subject to close quarters, such as narrow aisles or passageways/hallways.

* Noise levels are considered normal to loud, requiring workers to shout.
