Introduction The Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Public Health (DPH) works with our local and tribal public health partners, and community groups statewide, on a wide variety of programs and services that protect the health of Wisconsin residents.DPH is recruiting for two Toxicologists within the Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health (BEOH). One position is a Groundwater and Drinking Water Toxicologist, and the other position is a Site Evaluation Toxicologist.These positions offer the option to work remotely up to 5 days per week and will be headquartered at one of the DPH central or regional offices . This schedule may vary depending on training and operational needs. Position Summary As the Groundwater and Drinking Water Toxicologist, you will help protect the people of Wisconsin from unsafe exposures to toxic substances and environmental hazards in drinking water and groundwater. This position serves as the lead for the DPH Groundwater and Drinking Water Program.Duties of this position include:
- Providing toxicological and risk assessment expertise for the development of Wisconsin groundwater protection standards and health advisories.
- Serving as a technical expert to BEOH/DPH staff, local, state, and federal agencies, partner organizations, and the general public by responding to and addressing groundwater and drinking water-related environmental health issues.
- Providing toxicological leadership on drinking water and groundwater related public health priorities and the development of statewide policies to address contamination affecting drinking water and groundwater quality.
- Providing leadership for BEOH/DPH public health-related groundwater and drinking water outreach efforts.
As the Site Evaluation Toxicologist, you will help protect people in Wisconsin from unsafe exposures to environmental hazards and toxic substances in the environment.Duties of the position include:
- Designing and conducting health assessments, reviewing scientific literature, site-specific information, and other pertinent data to assess site conditions and recommend actions to protect Wisconsinites from exposure to toxic substances and other hazards in the environment.
- Serving as a technical expert to local, state and federal agencies, partner organizations, and the general public by responding to and addressing concerns and environmental hazards.
- Serving as a technical expert to other BEOH/DPH/DHS staff and programs by responding to and addressing environmental health concerns.
- Providing toxicological and environmental health leadership on public health priorities, including emerging issues and the development of statewide policies to address environmental contamination concerns that may affect public health.
Salary Information The starting pay is between $42.50 and $49.00 per hour (approximately between $88,400 and $101,900 per year), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. An add-on of $1.00 per hour may be paid for bilingual skills in Spanish or Hmong*.Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. The positions are classified as Research Scientists and are in pay schedule and range 81/02. A 24-month Career Executive trial period is required.*Note: If applicable, the selected candidate will be required to complete a language assessment in order to receive the add-on pay described above.

Qualifications Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:
- Experience , education, or training in the field of human toxicology.
- Experience writing peer-reviewed scientific publications or other science-based reports.
- Experience communicating scientific information to people without a scientific background.
- Experience with the identification and characterization of public health hazards.
Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:
- A master's degree or higher in a human health related field (e.g. toxicology, pharmacology, cancer biology, physiology, pathology, etc.).
- Experience with the factors that affect the fate and transport of toxic substances in environmental matrices.
- Experience with the principles and practices for investigating and remediating sites of environmental contamination by toxic substances.
- Experience with the processes used by state or federal agencies to establish maximum safe levels of toxic substances found in environmental matrices.
