- Job Summary
- The clinical toxicology education course for a Toxicology Fellow meets daily for didactics in twelve 4-week blocks throughout the year. During the first half of the term, Basic toxicology is reviewed, including the approach to the poisoned patient, initial stabilization and decontamination of the poisoned patient, and physical exam findings. Antidote therapy is discussed and reviewed for all learners. Cases from the states poison center are reviewed daily to increase clinical exposure to actual cases. The second half of the term includes invited speakers with expertise in international medicine, wilderness medicine, weapons of mass destruction and chemical / bioterrorism agents. In each rotation, clinical fellows will visit local nature center and botanical garden with the medical toxicology faculty for hands on experience with venomous reptile and poisonous plants and mushrooms. Clinical fellows are expected to cover seven call days, with close supervision of the on call medical toxicologist, and manage consults at the bedside to apply concepts learned throughout the course.
- Education
- Graduate from an accredited School of Pharmacy eligible for licensure by the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy. Completed a PGY-1 General Pharmacy Residency (possible waiver for years of experience in toxicology).
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with an advanced degree (masters or higher) in a field related to toxicology.
- Experience
- Experience in the field of clinical toxicology (poison center or emergency department) for 3-5 years.
