Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisory or administrative employee. Highly responsible, skilled work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of buildings, machinery, and/or mechanical apparatus and equipment. Duties and tasks are often difficult in nature requiring a high level of proficiency in the appropriate trade or skilled craft. Assignments may be in the form of sketches, diagrams, verbal or written instructions. May involve locating defective parts or determining the cause of malfunctioning machinery or systems, and supervising and assisting employees in completion of assigned projects. Must possess good verbal and written communication skills to interact with other employees and the public. Work is reviewed for accomplishment of desired results and quality of completed projects. Essential Job Functions Performs and supervises, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and/or mechanical repairs on buildings, structures and equipment;Builds or supervises the building and repair of slabs, valve pits, collection facilities and related structures;Instructs and assists less skilled workers in completing tasks related to manual trades or skilled crafts; Performs complex or specialized repair and maintenance work requiring extensive skill, proficiency or dexterity. Water DistributionSupervises and assists in making repairs and or connections to mains and valves;Supervises and assists in pipe installation and repairs, and assures proper backfill procedures are performed;Supervises and assists in the closing and opening of designated mains and valves when tie-ins or repairs are necessary;Installs, tests and repairs backflow devices throughout the City using plumbing techniques;Keeps written reports of test results;Inspects meters and properties to determine the degree of backflow protection needed; Sewer CollectionSupervises and assists in maintenance and repair work on pumps and other sewage collection and transmission systems;Operates a closed-circuit television camera, T.V. monitors, generators, air compressors, and required to inspect and repair sewer lines; Uses gas detector to insure wet wells, manholes and other confined spaces are safe to enter;Prepares and mixes the proper chemicals to pressure repair sewer lines;Uses a video recorder to record sewer line repairs;Generates and maintains reports on sewer lines in problem areas and completed sewer line repairs;Equipment MaintenanceInspects, maintains, repairs and rebuilds electrical pumps, motors, small gasoline engines and related equipment;Repairs and rebuilds lift station and water plant pumps and related specialized equipment;Uses gas detector to insure wet wells, manholes and other confined spaces are safe to enter;Performs welding and solder work and instructs subordinates in proper work methods;Performs skilled machinist work using metal lathe, tool and die, drill press, threading machine, and grinding machinery;Does related duties as required. EQUIPMENT USED/JOB LOCATION: Works outdoors in varying weather conditions;Operates vehicles, such as a van, pick-up or larger truck;Required to climb ladders and stairs;Required to use a variety of hand and power tools;Performs duties while exposed to dust and fumes.Uses a variety of precision measuring and testing equipment; cranes, lifting and trenching equipment.Minimum Requirements High school graduation plus considerable experience in building construction, mechanical equipment maintenance, or in the required area of crafts or trade specialization OR An equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: A valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B or higher. Skills Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in several crafts, or in the building, electrical or mechanical trades;Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building, electrical or mechanical trades;Thorough knowledge of the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of building structures, mechanical equipment and machinery;Good knowledge of the principles of mechanics;Ability to detect defects in machinery and equipment and to make necessary repairs or adjustment;Ability to use a variety of standard hand tools, machines and power equipment used in crafts, or in building and machinery repair work;Ability to work from oral or written instructions, complex diagrams, sketches and/or blueprints;Ability to make time and materials estimates;Ability to supervise a small group of unskilled, semi-skilled or skilled workers when necessary;Ability to lift, carry and drag heavy materials, tools and equipment;Ability to stoop, bend or crawl as needed to perform duties;Ability to operate a van, pick-up or larger truck;Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Health Care Group Health/Dental/Vision Insurance: HMO and dependent coverage is available Life Insurance: One times employee's gross annual salary.
