Requirements by LevelTraffic Control Specialist I (Entry-level)
- Preferred Qualifications: A minimum of one year of traffic control experience, including street painting and/or sign installation, and proficiency in sign-making and printing software.
- Required Certifications: IMSA Work Zone Safety and Level I Signs and Markings certifications within twelve months of employment.
- Pay Range: Starting at $21.75, up to $28.90, depending on qualifications.
Traffic Control Specialist II- Experience: At least three years of increasingly responsible traffic maintenance experience, including street painting and/or sign installation, and proficiency in sign-making and printing software.
- Required Certifications: IMSA Work Zone Safety and Level II Signs and Markings certifications.
- Pay Range: Starting at $23.75, up to $31.79, depending on qualifications.
Traffic Control Specialist III- Experience: At least five years of increasingly responsible traffic maintenance experience, including street painting and/or sign installation, and proficiency in sign-making and printing software.
- Required Certifications: IMSA Work Zone Safety and Level II Signs and Markings certifications.
- Pay Range: Starting at $25.50, up to $34.97, depending on qualifications.
- Additional Requirements for All Levels: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record.
Schedule: 7:30 AM to 4:00PM, Monday through Friday.

For more details, review the full job details and requirements below.The Traffic Control Specialist I is responsible for performing duties in support of the activities and services of the traffic engineering division. Key job duties include scheduling and participating in the installation and maintenance of traffic control indicators. This role also oversees updates and maintenance of asset inventory and the work order database in a mobile computer environment. This job is the first level of a three-level career progression of a Traffic Control Specialist I, II, and III.
Key Responsibilities- Participates in the fabrication, installation, replacement, and maintenance of all signs and pavement markings with the City of Olathe in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); leads, trains and reviews the work of less experienced and seasonal staff.
- Maintains a safe job site and work environment by ensuring proper traffic control, and safety standards as required by the City, County, State and Federal regulations; works safely and collaboratively with other employees in the completion of work assignments.
- Assists with Incident Management and Special Event operations as necessary; provides support to other city departments, divisions, external agencies, and responds to emergencies as directed in the interest of public safety and property protection.
- Investigates traffic control related complaints and requests from city officials, employees, and residents.
Qualifications Experience: A minimum of one year of Traffic Control experience, including street painting and/or sign installation, and proficiency in sign making and printing software is required.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. Additionally, possession of an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone Safety and Level I Signs and Markings certification, or an equivalent, are required within twelve months of employment.
Environmental or Physical Demands: Work is mainly performed outdoors with exposure to weather conditions which can include extreme heat, cold, rain and wind. May also be exposed to traffic noise, dust, fumes from vehicles and/or machinery. Moderate physical demands: strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; may be exposed to safety hazardous and dangerous tool and equipment. Bending, kneeling, reaching, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, which can include extreme heat, cold, rain and wind; may also be exposed to traffic noise, dust, fumes from machinery or from vehicles depending on worksite. May need to work in low light conditions or with glare from headlights.
