Duties
- Performs a broad range of activities related to traffic engineering including conducting joint field layouts with signal contractors, third party communication equipment and utility companies for traffic signal and overhead sign installations.
- Inspects more difficult or extensive road and signal projects involving Federal Aid Funding requiring detailed recordkeeping.
- Maintains project records that are subject to audit in addition to all normal inspection requirements.
- Prepares and distributes accurate Traffic Signal paperwork for field installations.
- Provides direction and coordinates the work of other inspectors (including third party contractors) when required.
- Calculates volumes and areas of complex shapes.
- Performs inspection on traffic signal installation and modernization work done by contractors.
- Keeps accurate records of contractor work.
- Lays out, programs and maintains vehicle detection systems and closed-circuit TV cameras.
- Evaluates, recommends and uses new traffic signal related technology including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), connected vehicles, Road Side Units (RSU), etc.
- Attends meetings as required by supervision.
- Assists with the review of traffic signal permit applications.
- Ability to use computer-based technology in performing work assignments.
- Must perform duties in a professional and courteous manner to promote a positive image of the Road Commission for Oakland County.
- Requires a daily schedule that supports RCOC hours of operation.
- Regular and predictable on-site job attendance is an essential function of this position.
Special Experience/Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent, with additional technical training in mathematics, electricity/electronics which would normally be acquired in the first year of college or technical school, is required.
- ITS certification and electrical apprentice certification are preferred.
- Knowledge of Field Manager and MDOT specifications are preferred.
- Availability and willingness to work overtime as required.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience commensurate with the duties described above is required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Driver's License.
