JOB SUMMARY:
Traffic Maintenance Workers within the Merit System are typically responsible for the installation, painting and maintenance of traffic signs and street markings. Individuals in this job class are responsible for installing traffic signals according to MUTCD regulations to assist the flow of traffic. They prepare work trucks with the needed equipment, materials, and tools for transport to the work site and also perform a variety of outdoor tasks, using power tools and mechanical equipment. The work requires loading and unloading materials and tools, preparing foundations for sign posts, installing sign posts, removing old markings and laying out and painting stop bars, cross walks, arrows and other markings onto road and street surfaces. Their work is normally assigned and performed according to oral and written instructions from a supervisor and is inspected daily for completion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess the following:
* Driver's license.
* Experience working with hand tools (shovels, sledgehammers, screwdrivers, or comparable tools).
* Experience using measurement tools (tape measure, measuring wheel, etc.).
JOB DUTIES:
Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:
* Prepares for daily activities by collecting the needed supplies and equipment, loading and inspecting the work truck and/or other vehicles, using various pieces of loading equipment, and driving to the worksite in order to complete projects as assigned.
* Ensures safety by setting up worksites according to industry standard safety protocols including the use of warning lights, placement of temporary warning signs, barricade and/or cone placement, appropriate vehicle placement, communicating with crew, and the use of personal protective equipment.
* Completes various work orders and tasks related to the installation of traffic control devices using industry-standard appropriate procedures (i.e., MUTCD, State, Local) including taking various measurements, using tools and equipment to prepare worksites, clearing debris, and placing new traffic control devices.
* Completes various work orders and tasks related to the installation of traffic signals using industry-standard appropriate procedures (i.e., MUTCD regulations, work orders) including removing and replacing light bulbs, completing the assembly of traffic lights, correcting traffic signal timing, using equipment to aid the installation of traffic lights, and troubleshooting and diagnosing traffic light issues.
* Conducts cleanup and maintenance activities including cleaning the work truck, maintaining the sign shop, cleaning various pieces of equipment, unloading and storing materials, and reporting damaged items to ensure that all vehicles and equipment are in good working order and ready to be used again.
CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
* Knowledge of drafting principles related to mapping, street layouts, parking lots and traffic control devices.
* Knowledge of the basic operation of various tools and equipment such as hand tools, power blower, burners, and drills as needed to perform job tasks.
* Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other applicable standards related to traffic.
* Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the production of traffic signs.
* Knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and painting of traffic signs and marking systems.
* Knowledge of the types and uses of various traffic control devices.
* Knowledge of traffic planning, practices, and principles of traffic control devices (and roadways).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as roadways, construction sites, parks, etc. Work involves use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, hand saws, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Job May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
