JOB OVERVIEW: Performs the repair, maintenance, and installation of traffic signal systems, roadway lighting, and communications equipment; inspects the installation of traffic signal systems; performs the collection of and assists with the evaluation of various traffic engineering studies; on-call 24 hours a day to provide traffic control assistance in emergencies such as traffic accidents or natural disasters; operates snowplow and salt spreader as needed for snow removal; performs other duties as assigned. All work performed under direct supervision.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Assists on emergency calls, such as malfunctioning equipment and traffic crashes involving equipment for signals, lighting, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), and communication systems, and takes appropriate action.
* Assists in the investigation of customer service reports regarding signal, operations and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices and report of findings.
* Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, radio communication equipment, ITS, roadway lighting, and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.
* Assists in the interpretation of signal circuit plans and schematics for troubleshooting problems with electronic/electrical components.
* Utilizes software to communicate with and program electronic traffic control devices and radio communication equipment.
* Assists in the installation, repair, and troubleshooting of communication devices including fiber networks, wireless devices, and radios.
* Assists in the inventory of electronic/electrical parts and supplies.
* Maintains required records and documentation on the installation, maintenance, repair, or replacement of signals, lighting, and communication equipment.
* Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
* Assists in the completion of the department's signal and lighting preventive maintenance program.

REQUIREMENTS:
* Education
* General/technical high school diploma or GED equivalent.
* Certifications
* A valid class B commercial driver's license w/air brake endorsement.
* Certification in International Municipal Signal Association Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control or be able to obtain within 1 year of employment.
* Certification as an International Municipal Signal Association Traffic Signal Technician Level I, or be able to obtain within 1 year of employment.
* Job Experience
* Three years of experience in signal and/or radio maintenance as a Traffic Signal Technician I or equivalent.
* Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of all applicable standards and procedures for job tasks.
* Knowledge, skills, and abilities
* Minimum of 6 months experience as a Highway Department Street Maintenance Worker, or 0-2 years' experience in construction with a technical school degree/certificate in electrical components and circuitry, or 2-4 years' experience in construction, equipment operation or related experience.
* Experience in traffic signal construction or maintenance is preferred.
* Working knowledge of the hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of specialized signal equipment.
