The Position

The City of Cedar Park is seeking qualified candidates for a Traffic Signal Technician I.

JOB SUMMARY

The Traffic Signal Technician I will assist other Traffic Signal Technicians and the Traffic Signal Foreman with basic repair and maintenance of traffic signals, school zone beacon assemblies, pedestrian crossing beacon assemblies, roadway illumination, and all related infrastructure and systems. Duties include but are not limited to, monitoring traffic systems; repairing, replacing, and installing traffic signals, school zone beacons, crosswalk beacons, roadway illumination, and communication equipment; and conducting routine and preventive maintenance on equipment currently in operation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Performs basic troubleshooting of traffic signal and street light equipment

* Monitors and maintains traffic cameras.

* Inspects and repairs streetlights.

* Performs basic maintenance of wide-area network (WAN) and associated telemetry systems.

* Installs and maintains vehicle sensing equipment.

* Performs the replacement of traffic signal lights, heads, and control hardware.

* Performs routine maintenance of traffic signals, school zone beacons, and streetlights.

* Installs and maintains new equipment, and removes and replaces components.

* Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls.

* Calculates and measures resistance, amperage, voltage, and wattage values of active electrical and electronic systems.

* Maintains and installs internally lighted street name (ILSN) signs.

* Assists other departments by helping with tree removal or trimming; assists with aerial lighting issues; provides electrical support for construction projects, assists with signs and markings, assists with installation of electrical and data conductors.

* Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

* Must be able and willing to work at heights typically associated with repair, installation, and maintenance of traffic signals and streetlights.

* Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

* Performs scheduled and unscheduled installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signs, streetlights, traffic markings, traffic signals and other associated equipment.

* This position must be able to be scheduled for on-call rotation to respond to emergencies and after-hour repair needs.

* Follows established policies, procedures, and techniques concerning traffic signs, signals, and outdoor lighting.

* Receives, investigates complaints, takes appropriate action as instructed.

* Maintains and troubleshoots pedestrian signals, equipment, and school zone signals.

* Operates a bucket truck, work truck, and other vehicles, tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned work, including chain saws and other trimming and pruning tools and ensures that they are maintained an kept in good, safe working conditions;

* Follows safety policies, proper usage of equipment, safety devices, vehicles, and all departmental and city policies.

* Escalates customer complaints to a Superintendent, Foreman, Engineer, or Assistant Director.

* As an essential employee, you are subject to regular work hours, after-hours callouts, and scheduled overtime during emergency situations which can include icy weather, flooding, police department assistance, etc., including a required on-call rotation, and special events.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

* High School Diploma or its equivalent

* One (1) to Two (2) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical, electronic, and/or mechanical systems, At least one of the two (2) years in the repair, maintenance, and/or construction of traffic signals and roadway illumination infrastructure (preferred)

* IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I Certification, OR the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire

* IMSA, TEEX, or approved equivalent work zone safety certification OR the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

* Class B Texas CDL or the ability to acquire within (1) year of hire pending availability of class offerings

* OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

* Valid Texas Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: management of construction, installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal infrastructure; traffic signal operation procedures and regulations; traffic signal maintenance practices, procedures, and equipment; basic knowledge of traffic engineering principles; National Electric Code (NEC); Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) pertaining to traffic signals and signs; operation of WAN, intermediate-level Ethernet and computer networking operations, GPS, and Bluetooth devices; modern electrical test equipment and current technology; applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, resolutions, functions, and activities of Public Works departments.

Skill/Ability to: operate computer using traffic signal software; understand, utilize, and comply with the NEC; understand, utilize, and comply with MUTCD standards for signs and signals; read and understand circuit schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical instruction manuals; operate and work in a bucket truck; comply with all applicable safety regulations while working on electrical systems and in high traffic conditions; and troubleshoot computerized traffic signal systems, including field equipment and traffic management center devices. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, squat, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
