Description
Public Works Department is seeking a full time Traffic Signs and Pavement Marking Technician. Duties include installation, repair and maintenance of City owned signs, poles, lane striping and other pavement markings.

Essential Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
* Installs, repairs and maintains signs used to regulate, warn, guide or otherwise inform vehicles or pedestrians on or near roadways and other public areas.
* Installs ground-mounted sign poles, as well as overhead-sign mounting, are considered normal and necessary duties of this job.
* Installs and maintains traffic-related road striping using specialized paint striping truck.
* Installs and maintains thermoplastic pavement markings such as turn arrows, crosswalks, and other roadway/public area markings.
* Installs and maintains signs and banners using a bucket truck at heights of 15' to 40'.
* Employs sound judgment and a working knowledge of the current MUTCD standards in placement of signs and other markings, such as layout of lane lines and stop bars.
* Employs standard procedures and exercises sound judgment in altering traffic patterns at work sites to prevent traffic hazards; sets up applicable signs, and performs flagging operations as required.
* Participates in the City's scheduled sign maintenance program including, but not limited to, proactively identifying signs and poles requiring repair/replacement.
* Assists in setup of major detouring operations in support of City related road projects or emergency activities.
* Actively seeks to identify and recommend improvements to sign and pavement markings operations.
* Conforms to requirements to notify utilities (via Miss Utility) prior to installation of sign poles.
* Assists in the fabrication of signs, as needed, to support the sign shop operation.
* Performs routine maintenance of painting machine components/assemblies of the striping truck. Assists in troubleshooting and repair of minor paint machine malfunctions.
* Operates and maintains the walk-behind striper and walk-behind grinder, as well as sign-pole drivers and other power equipment as needed.
* Operates bucket truck to perform overhead sign installations.
* Maintains records, as necessary, including documentation of work performed and inspection reports.
* Responds to emergency calls or unusual situations.
* Responds to city-wide emergencies, such as snow, floods and wind storms.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
* Picks up and maintains parts/material inventory.
* Assists in the collection of traffic related data, as needed.
* Performs general housekeeping duties in the shop and storage areas.
* Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
* When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory duties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Formal training in, or ability to obtain, Work Zone Safety and Sign and Pavement marking certification. Previous experience in traffic controls and installation/ maintenance of traffic signs/markings; or equivalent combination of experience/training which provides the required skills and abilities to perform the job.
Additional Requirements
* Possession of valid Driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria;
* Ability to obtain CDL learners within 45 days of employment;
* Ability to obtain Class A CDL within 6 monthsof employment;
* Ability to obtain flagger certification card within 30 days of employment;
* Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
