Summary:
The Transport Assistant is a member of the PACU team who provides safe transport of patients to and from the Operating Room. He/She also transports specimens, supplies, equipment, and participates in patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse. Ensures optimal patient comfort and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities:
EDUCATION
+ High School graduate or equivalent
EXPERIENCE
+ Prior experience in a healthcare setting in some support role is preferred
+ Prior experience in patient transfers and the use of assistive equipment is desired
+ Prior experience with hospital computer information system preferred
+ Basic office experience with telephones, copier, fax machine preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
+ Ability to independently assist most patients from bed or chair to wheelchair, and, with one or more assists, move patients from bed to stretcher
+ Ability to independently transport patients pushing wheelchairs and one additional device (oxygen, IV pump) or to push stretcher and one device (IV pump), including navigating crowded hallways, negotiating turns, and boarding elevators
+ Ability to hear high-pitched or low-pitched sounds, hear ordinary conversation
+ Ability to see with near activity
+ Within 60 days of beginning this job, must acquire competence in the following skills:
+ Must be able to connect and regulate a portable oxygen device
+ Must be able to manage IV tubing and maintain IV pump to preserve battery life
+ Must pay strict attention to detail and maintain alertness to detect evidence of changes in patient status as well as equipment malfunctions
+ Ability to manage own time effectively and anticipate changes in workflow
+ Must possess patience and maturity in dealing with patients and families as well as medical staff and other hospital personnel
+ Ability to tolerate highly charged emotional situations, such as when called to a cardiac arrest
+ Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the hospital
+ Good general health necessary in order to stand and walk most of the day
WORKING CONDITIONS
+ Ability to work closely with ill patients, often necessitating lifting or aiding patients in walking
+ Ability and willingness to perform routine, repetitive, and physical tasks; pushing wheelchairs, carts and other heavy equipment
+ Intermittent exposure to a few unpleasant conditions
+ Exposure to patients who may be confused or combative
