Position DescriptionPerforms transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.The Transportation Engineer I follows standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.The Transportation Engineer II performs work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.The Transportation Engineer III establishes their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.Essential Duties:Transportation Engineer I:
- Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
- Assists in evaluating pavement products and pavement condition data.
- Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.
- Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
- Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
- Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
- Performs data collection, analyses, forecasts and plan development.
- Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Provides assistance in preparing reports on pavement condition
- Performs other duties as assigned
Transportation Engineer II all the above and:
- Evaluates pavement products and pavement condition data.
- Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
- Provides design engineering support for districts in project development.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
- Writes/reviews proposals and estimates for letting
Transportation Engineer III all the above and:
- Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
- Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
- Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.
- Provides assistance in preparing reports on pavement conditions.
- Reviews designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.
- Reviews, coordinates and monitors routine and emergency maintenance contracts; performs/oversees maintenance specifications writing/review, plans and proposal review, and preparation of estimates for letting.
- Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
Minimum Qualifications:Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.Experience:Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experienceTransportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experienceTransportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum QualificationsLicenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
