SUMMARY
The Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing the entire Transportation department. This individual ensures that orders are completed in a timely and quality manner by drivers. This is a complex, management position that relies heavily on getting things done through others and providing oversight and direction for various areas within the department, including drivers, helpers, dispatch, and the fridge unit. This individual needs to be a self-starter and have a vision of what is required to take the department to the next level. Expert leadership is needed to develop, train, and hold people accountable through clear expectations.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's in Operations, Logistics, Business Management, or related field strongly preferred
- 5-10 years' experience in a relevant industry (e.g., inflight catering, airport hub environment, manufacturing, logistics, or food) managing 100+ non-exempt level employees
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong leadership experience with a background in turnaround environments
- Strong communication skills, able to communicate with all levels from non-exempt to upper management
- Ability to handle conflict and de-escalate emotionally charged situations
- Good understanding of OSHA, HR, and other employment laws
- Knowledge of investigation procedures and root cause analysis
- Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and operational processes
- Knowledge of HACCP & food safety standards
- Strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Resilient self-starter, capable of acting independently and learning quickly in a rapidly evolving environment
- Aptitude for self-initiative and follow-through
- Detail-oriented with the ability to see the big picture
- Proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Excellent organizational and motivational skills
- Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability
- Strong analytical skills for interpreting data to manage risk effectively
- Ability to collaborate with site operations, functional leaders, external clients, and vendors
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervisory and Management
- Supervise and manage employees across all areas of the department, including dispatch, drivers, helpers, supervisors, admin staff, and general workers
- Motivate and inspire team members to exceed expectations through recognition programs
- Ensure that all policies and procedures are followed according to requirements
- Communicate effectively with all crew and team members
- Hold team members accountable for meeting expectations
Operations/Logistics
- Ensure compliance with all relevant government regulatory agencies (e.g., FDA, USDA, OSHA, EPA, DOT, HACCP)
- Investigate and document incidents/accidents
- Observe service operations and ensure all safety rules and regulations are followed
- Provide solutions to problems in transportation, unloading, offloading, and other processes
- Enforce safety processes and legal requirements for transportation and other tasks
- Organize regular audits and set up corrective action plans
- Perform fleet maintenance and ensure safety protocols are followed
- Maintain punctuality and reliability
- Perform other duties as assigned
Quality and Safety
- Ensure processes meet customer specifications
- Adhere to good hygiene and manufacturing practices (e.g., HACCP, FIFO)
- Carry out cleaning, washing, and sanitation per the cleaning plan
- Investigate and complete incidents/accidents documentation
- Enforce safety processes and legal requirements
- Organize regular audits and set up corrective action plans
- Perform fleet maintenance and ensure safety protocols
Human Resources
- Interview and determine candidates for the department
- Approve time-off requests and other leaves of absence
- Conduct performance reviews for department team members
- Approve timecards and resolve discrepancies
- Mentor and coach team members, providing corrective actions as needed
- Ensure regular and timely attendance
- Perform other duties as assigned
