This position will operate various pieces of equipment including mini excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, herbicide applicator truck, man lift, tractor trailer, front end loader and other pieces of equipment as needed. This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Responsibilities include but are not limited to installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, pavement repairs, manual brush and tree removal, debris, litter, and dead animal removal as well as snow and ice clearing. The position will also include concrete pavement and bridge repairs, herbicide application, graffiti removal, and the installation and repair of signs, pavement markings and markers. The applicant must be knowledgeable of computers and will be responsible for tracking work electronically on a computer or tablet. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed on and beside high-volume Primary and Interstate Routes and requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces, and slopes. This position will respond to emergencies such as snow and ice, downed trees, debris removal, traffic control installation, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions are required. This position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils. Visual acuity is required. Safety toe shoes are required.Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:* Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices* Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching* Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as, directing the daily activities of a work crew* Experience in snow and ice removal operations* Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeperAdditional Expectations:The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience.
