Job DetailsJob LocationMain Hospital Campus Headquarters - Madison, WVDescriptionSummary To transport patients between rooms and hospital departments while ensuring safety throughout the entire transfer procedure. This includes assisting patients in and out of cars and lifting patients on and off beds. Transporters also may be needed to assist with EKGs, transporting lab specimens, and obtaining vital signs. Essential FunctionsReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.The Patient Transporter/Technician is expected to perform the following essential functions:
  • Transports patients by assisting patients in and out of ambulances, cars, and helicopters; lifting patients on and off beds; moving them to and from special service and treatment areas, and operating rooms; using wheelchairs or moveable beds.
  • Comforts patients and their families by offering support and encouragement; being punctual and attentive to procedure schedules; demonstrating caring and cultural sensitivity.
  • Confer with providers and nurses and take orders for patient transport activities.
  • Assist patients with moving out of their beds, wheelchairs, or stretchers.
  • Provide physical support to patients attempting to walk.
  • Provide emotional support to patients.
  • Ensure appropriate identification of patients before transporting them.
  • Transports laboratory specimens by picking-up specimens and delivering them to specified laboratory.
  • Ensure that transport equipment such as wheelchairs and stretchers are in proper working condition prior to patient pick up.
  • Transports equipment and supplies by picking-up requisitioned orders; delivering them to assigned treatment areas and patient care areas.
  • Provide guidance to hospital visitors and families.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with federal and state legal regulations and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirements.
  • Maintains HIPAA Compliance
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Enhances health care organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Required Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • BLS certification within 90 days required.
  • Must possess effective communication skills to interact with patients, co-workers, and public.
  • Must be able to multitask.
  • Knowledge of office equipment.
  • You will have to be physically strong and emotionally stable as there will be times you are required to provide patients a shoulder to lean on and vent their emotions.

Physical demands
  • Ability to perform various motor skills such as; standing for long periods of time, walking, lifting on patients using proper lifting techniques, stair climbing, reaching, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, grasping and arm-hand coordination on a continuous basis. Weight limits to lift, lower, push, pull, and retrieve objects must be a minimum of 50 pounds. Reasonable assistance may be requested when lifting, pushing, and/or pulling exceeds these minimum requirements. Must have ability to walk continuously through assigned shift.

Required education and experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred education and experience
  • One (1) year experience in healthcare setting, Emergency Department preferred.
