Applicants must successfully pass each of the selection processes by 70% or better to proceed in the process.This posting is subject to close after 14 daysThis is skilled work as a lead worker performed under general supervision involving the planting, maintenance and removal of trees and shrubs. Assists with other duties seasonally including road salting, snow plowing, brush removal, compost operations, recycle/yard waste, pothole and street repairs and concrete repair.There are five full-time Tree Trimmers reporting directly to the Right Of Way Foreman. There are two Tree Trimmer II designations. Major Duties
  • Climbs trees or works from an aerial lift to trim dead, broken, misshapen or undesired branches.
  • Removes dead, diseased or dangerous trees.
  • Operates trucks, saws, brush chipper, stump remover, hi-ranger, and other mechanical equipment necessary in the performance of duties.
  • Plants trees and shrubbery and maintains newly planted trees and shrubbery.
  • Sprays trees and shrubs in efforts to prevent disease or insect infestation.
  • Repairs and maintains handsaws, chain saws and other tools.
  • Counsels the public in efforts to prevent and combat tree diseases.
  • Acts as lead worker in tree trimming responsibilities.
  • Assists with plowing and salting of roads in times of heavy snowfall.
  • Sets up proper and effective safety controls such as cones, barricades, etc. around work areas in efforts to protect pedestrians, motorists and workers on job sites.
  • Assists with identification of equipment needed for each assigned job; ensuring equipment is clean and safe. Includes a second walk-around of all equipment for an assigned crew.
  • Is vigilant for potentially unsafe conditions and practices: identifies such and communicates recommended corrective action to crew and supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience in tree trimming and tree removal in an urban environment.
  • Ability to operate saws, chippers, trucks with aerial lift booms, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Laborer, Equipment Operator, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience working at various heights of 30 feet or more from an aerial lift.
  • Willingness to work out of doors in all types of weather.
  • Knowledge of effective safety controls to protect pedestrians, motorists and workers on the job site.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public regarding information of a technical nature related to trees.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal skills for effective communication with the public and work crew members.
  • Must have and maintain a valid State of Michigan CDL B with proper endorsements.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work with limited instruction.

  • Responds to storm emergencies during evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
