BROAD FUNCTIONProvides personal, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors within an assigned area of the college campus. Provides escort services and other basic public assistance services as needed and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties within assigned area. Remains alert to emergency situations and provides first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral if requiredFor highest consideration, please complete application by 11/30/24ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.* Successfully pass the firearms standards as set forth by the Department within the first 90 days of employment. Employee must be able to shoot at MCOLES standards.* Work in an armed capacity while on duty and performing duties for the Safety & Security Department.* Successfully maintain all certifications and/or Department standards for firearms and physical skills at regular intervals as set forth by the Department.* Patrols assigned area on foot, in assigned motor vehicle, or other specialized vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.* Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.* Performs periodic checks of emergency call boxes and/or streetlights to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.* Maintains security controls for issued University keys; safeguards and controls issued University equipment.* Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.* Maintain professional public relations with all staff, students, visitors and community.* Operate the computer security system, providing ingress and egress for authorized personnel.* Patrol campus areas and investigate and report dangerous, unusual or suspicious activities.* Maintain confidential files.* Accurately prepare complaint and/or incident reports.* Assist in providing traffic and crowd management during athletic and special events.* Stay current with State ordered regulations.* Serve as the back-up to the Team Leader and coordinate all activities in their absence.* Responsible for understanding, supporting, and actively demonstrating the College's beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are often obtained by completing an associate degree and two years of related experience or five years of related experience.Knowledge of:* Campus buildings' layout and location* Burglar and fire systems.* Computer software and hardware used in building security.* State, County and Local laws and ordinances* Department security codes, policies, and regulations* Traffic and crowd control methods and techniques.* Security and law enforcement procedures.* Transmission, broadcasting, switching, control, and operation of telecommunications systems.* Incident and complaint reporting processes and procedures.Skills and Abilities to:* Successfully pass a background check* Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no restrictions.* Have or obtain a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) within the first 90 days of employment.* Successfully pass the OC (pepper spray) class as set forth by the Department within the first 90 days of employment.* Successfully pass the physical skills (survival tactics and arrest procedures) standards as set forth by the Department within the first 90 days of employment.* Successfully complete the three online Federal Emergency Management Institute classes required by the Department, (IS100leb, IS700a and IS704) within the first 90 days of employment.* Effectively communicate in person and over radio channels.* Understand, follow, and enforce state and local laws, ordinances, safety codes, regulations, and procedures.* Detect problems and investigate and accurately report information to appropriate personnel.* Ability to take charge of a situation and take proper action when necessary.* React calmly and effectively in disaster and emergency situations.* Provide safety and security services to the campus community.* Be flexible, provide excellent customer service, and use strong interpersonal skills.* Maintain confidentiality and work under stressful conditions.* Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views, opinions, and antagonistic subjects.* Conduct routine duties without direct supervision.* Visual and audio surveillance.* Complete routine paperwork.* View multiple video monitors* Ability to work varying work schedules and assignments to facilitate a 24 hour a day and 7 day a week work schedule.* Ability to work extended shifts due to emergency or disaster situations.The knowledge, skills and abilities required are often obtained by completing an associate degree and working two or more years in a related position or an equivalent combination of education experience.WORKING CONDITIONS:Physically patrolling in/outdoor environments; regularly exposed to hazards associated with security and safety of life and property.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESNone.CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTSInternal: Daily contact with safety and security manager and other department personnel.
