DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSUnder direction, an employee in this class assists the Sheriff in administering and coordinating the activities of the Sheriff's Office. Supervision is exercised over all Sheriff's employees. Has responsibility for the operation of the Sheriff's Office in the Sheriff's absence. Does related work as required.
Salary: $ 149,240.00 TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:- Performs the duties of the Sheriff in his absence;
- Assists the Sheriff in planning and administering all functions of the office;
- Has general supervision over and is responsible for the operations of the Civil Department, Criminal Department, Parks Division, Warrant Squad, Radio Room, B. C. I., Purchasing and Payroll, Garage Mechanics, County Jail, and County Honor Farm;
- Assists in coordinating mutual police matters with all Village, Town and County Police Departments, District Attorney's Office, County Welfare Department, County Probation Department and all Suffolk County Courts;
- Has general supervision over all employees of the Sheriff's Office and County Jail;
- Reports the activities of all departments to the Sheriff.
Minimum Qualification and Education Requirements:- Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State with a Bachelor's Degree and ten (10)years of progressively responsible law enforcement and police administration experience, including at least five (5) years in a command position with oversight within an organization of similar size and scope.
- Qualified candidates will also have a minimum of five (5) years of staff management and supervisory experience.
- Progressive supervisory experience should have been gained with a large law enforcement agency.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES OF THE ROLE:- Thorough knowledge of the operation and approved practices of all departments in the Sheriff's Office
- Thorough knowledge of the Criminal, Civil, Vehicle and Traffic Laws
- Thorough knowledge of the approved practices of Deputies and Guards' duties
- Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale
- Ability to keep records and make written and oral reports
- Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public
- Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
