The Underwriting Consultant will provide solutions-oriented decision support for field underwriters on transactions that exceed field authority. In this new role, the individual will build and execute an efficient referral process that balances quality risk taking and market engagement, while holding the highest level transactional underwriting authority. Any underwriter can say no to a deal or require tedious Q&A before saying yes. A successful Underwriting Consultant will quickly identify the reasonable information necessary to make a risk-taking decision, and either help an underwriter find a way to offer a proposal or clearly communicate why we must decline. In the process, the individual will coach and mentor underwriters while identifying broader training needs and communicating them internally. Maintains a solid understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values. Upholds the standards of the AmTrust organization.

Responsibilities

* Quickly, effectively, and empathetically make underwriting decisions based on analysis of risk and exposures, lines with AmTrust, market realities, and agent relationships

* Provide consultation on AmTrust product and coverage capabilities and dealmaking dynamics to help underwriters show market savvy and sell against competitors

* Ensure risks align with AmTrust appetite while making intelligent exceptions

* Guide pricing based on market knowledge, filings, and predictive tools while weighing all-lines price adequacy

* Collaborate closely with Line of Business leaders, Underwriters, Sales, and other management * With Corporate Underwriting, identify training needs and develop and deliver training

* Share accountability in meeting corporate and regional growth and profit goals

* Partner with region underwriting managers in evaluating underwriter performance

* May occasionally participate in industry events and travel to meet with agencies to support relationships as needed.

* Maintain strong product line and industry expertise and stay abreast of changes in markets

* Other tasks, responsibilities and projects as needed.

Qualifications

* Solutions oriented

* Pragmatic: asks for what is reasonable, not what is ideal; understands that underwriters are competitors in a market

* Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience

* 7+ years of experience in a Commercial Lines multiline underwriting role

* Must have property and general liability expertise, plus experience underwriting Workers Compensation and Auto

* Knowledge of commercial lines products, coverages and pricing practices, including market trends

* Strong analytical and organizational skills

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills

* Strong knowledge of marketplace to appropriately position policy terms and conditions.

* Previous management a plus

* Work closely with loss control, premium audit and claims as needed

* Work with regional underwriting and sales department to facilitate business flow

* Help provide guidance to other underwriting staff on technical issues

* Demonstrated decision making skills

* Commercial Technical Knowledge
