Position SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Park & Recreation Director, this position manages the daily operations of Unity Health & Fitness Center. This includes overseeing staff, managing budgets, organizing fitness programs, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all members and guests.

Class CharacteristicsThis is a mid-management-level class responsible for the overall administration of the fitness center. The position ensures that the fitness center operates efficiently and effectively, provides high-quality customer service, and meets the fitness and wellness needs of the community. The role is distinguished from other positions by its focus on strategic planning, staff management, and operational oversight.

  • Manages the daily operations of the fitness center, including scheduling, staffing, and overseeing routine cleaning and maintenance.
  • Develops and implements fitness programs, classes, and events to meet the needs of diverse members.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates fitness center staff and instructors.
  • Manages the Unity budget, including monitoring expenditures and revenues.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and safety of the facility, equipment, and amenities.
  • Maintains accurate records of memberships, class attendance, and financial transactions.
  • Promotes the fitness center and its programs through marketing and community outreach efforts.
  • Handles customer inquiries, complaints, and emergencies in a professional and timely manner.
  • Develops and enforces policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with other departments and community organizations to enhance program offerings.
  • Conducts regular assessments of fitness programs and services to ensure quality and effectiveness.
  • Prepares reports and presentations on Unity Health & Fitness performance and future needs.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.

Supervisory ResponsibilityReceives general supervision from the Park & Recreation Director. Provides direct supervision to fitness center staff and instructors. Manages fitness center projects and initiatives. Provides training and development opportunities for staff.

Work EnvironmentThis position routinely works indoors in a fitness center environment. May be exposed to loud noise levels, varying temperatures, and potentially hazardous equipment. Interaction with upset staff, public, and private representatives may occur.

Physical DemandsMust possess mobility to work in a fitness center; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform physical tasks associated with fitness training and equipment maintenance; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. The job involves frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkThis is a full-time salaried position. Normal hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

TravelLimited travel is required for this position.

Education and ExperienceAny combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Equivalent to the completion of a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation Management, or a related field.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in fitness center management, including supervisory responsibilities.

License and Certifications

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid driver's license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR/AED certificate from an accredited entity.
  • Certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., ACSM, NASM, ACE) is preferred.
